In a self-righteous bloke way he wouldn't let me go near our new washing machine, HAD to connect/ manouvere it in himself. Plus the manual is for wimps.

Cue much nagging checking from me that he knows what he's doing, everything's ok etc.

I've been upset until today as on spin the machine jumps and bashes around like mad, unusable smacking off the walls. Tried stuffing newspaper down the side etc. and so upset that I'd bought such crap.

But then doubt set in. I thought, no he couldn't have...

But yes he hadn't moved the bolts that hold the drum in place during transit! Runs like a mouse now I've removed them, thank god the drum didn't just fall out on the floor or anything.

How should I enjoy ripping the piss breaking this news to him upon his return as the little wife who doesn't understand big man complicated machinery :-)

I'd buy a frame, mount the bolts and place it in the loo, so he is reminded of your amazingness several times a day.
With a short explanation so that visitors can appreciate you too.

I actually snorted coffee out my nose at the idea of framing the bolts in the loo.

What a school boy error to make!

Ripping of piss needed.

Oh, that one would last me for years Grin

Sadly, my dh is always right when it comes to mechanical and setting stuff up, so I never get one over on him.

In this situation, I found a very low key but sustained gloating was very satisfying.

And I quote "What do you mean, Virgo? Restraining bolts? What are they?"

Must be lovely to be so self-assured with zero information. Grin

Just read this to DH before i'd finished he laughed that he must of forgotten to take the bolts out. He says don't let him forget this one Grin

Fuck, that was a narrow escape, surely! I would have thought that was quite risky, running it with the fixing bolts still in place?
Thank goodness for female sense - and yes, DO show him the bolts and ask him if he knows what they are - and please post his response! Grin

Thats why i do anything like that in this house. When we got our new washer i asked dp to loosen the bolts as they were too tight and he refused for ages saying you're not meant to Hmm Finally persuaded him to and plumbed it in myself [proud emotion]

NOoooooo ..... cease and desist immediatley!!!!!!!!

Absolutely do NOT say anything you could do irreparable damage to your husband's sense of self esteem and confidence. Potentially, this kind of thing can cause impotentence in serious cases and needs careful handling.

An instruction book is merely one interpretation of how a machine might work in theory. Trust me on this, your husband was right in the middle of carrying out a series of carefully planned test runs to adjust the machine to local operating conditions. The fact that you happened, by pure chance, on the correct settings is no indication of his competence.

I suggest his favourite dinner on the table, your best frock on, and big thank you when he comes home. Hide the bolts and never mention it again.

That should save the day and you do know it makes sense in the long run. Wink

Can I tell you a story?....

Many, many years ago, my db moved in with his girlfriend. They bought a new machine and the same happened to theirs like it did to yours. He didn't know what to do. He asked me for my help.... He loaded it in to his car and we took it back to the shop and I demanded and stamped my foot asked politely that they give my db a new waching machine as this was obviously broken. You guessed it, the bracket was still intact. I have never forgiven db I still remind db to this day about it!

I'd suggest saying you called the supplier helpline, they sent a nice man out to fix it and as it was user error you have a big bill. Probably easier to bear than the truth.

Haha! Brilliant!!!

Having said that, I'm rather impressed your DH would have a go at anything this technical - mine certainly wouldn't and in fact isn't really aware which machine is the dishwasher and which machine is the tumble drier....

My DP managed to knock the cistern off the wallwhen painting the bathroom and failed to fix it several times before eventually managing, I still remind him about it.

He He, the exact same thing happened to me, I left DH to it and did the first wash accompanied by banging and dancing round the untility room (by the washing machine). He assured me he'd done it properly so I repositioned it and did another wash the next day which resulted in dents to the washer and next door dryer.

I rang the helpline and a very nice man talked me through what to do with and was very nice about it.

When I told DH he did his usual trick of trying to convince me that somehow he wasn't at fault. Why is it so hard to admit to being wrong?

[snigger]

Leave them somewhere prominent and wait for him to ask what they are. Say, innocently and politely "The washing machine was making a dreadful racket and I found these in the back. What do you think they might be?"

Report

I am delighted to say that I knew it was the transit bolts by the time I got to the bit about the machine jumping about [smug]
