First purchase for DC 4 has to be soundproofing!

Live in a paper-thin walled terrace. Already a bit self conscious about our noise level, and now DC4 on the way. DC3 we had no neighbours; dc 1&2 we had student neighbours. Now we've gone up in the world, and I'm worried about how our genteel new neighbours will react!

How would you go about soundproofing? I'm thinking fitted bookshelves along party walls; hanging carpets; maybe even double glazing.

It all might be quite ££££ , and I am quite aware that this might all be a hormonal over-reaction! It feels an important part of feeling 'safe' in my house. I have visions of walking the streets all day with a colicky baby to avoid the awkwardness of knowing that every squeak can be heard next door.

Yes, this is hard. No one likes being kept awake by a screaming baby, but it would generally be very unreasonable for them to complain. It's a baby, it has no off switch!

Can you have the cot in an area of the house that will keep the travelling noise to a minimum?

Cot'll have to be in our bedroom - which adjoins both of our neighbours' bedrooms!

Perhaps you could talk to them both and warn them of the possible noise? There's fuck all they can do about it, but it might prevent any ill feeling if you acknowledge that it won't be fun for them before the event.

When our DD was tiny and sleeping in our room we put rugs down on the floor, big wardrobe against one party wall and cupboards along the other party wall. Extra storage space is always good. Our neighbours always claimed they hardly ever heard the baby, which was sweet of them. Now one set of neighbours has a newborn and they've put their wardrobes against our party wall and it's fine. We hear the baby but it doesn't bother us. We let DD nap in living room (very soundproof with wall lined bookshelves) during day and in spare room at back of house where neighbours didn't use the adjoining room. Absolutely no complaints.
