To think this midwife is irresponsible to say the least and wonder if i can report her to someone

Ill try to keep this short without missing bits out!

I am 9 weeks with my fifth child. I was approached a a surestart event by a midwife who represents a private company working within the nhs. It is some sort of scheme whereby women can transfer care to this group and then have the same midwife throughout the pregnancy who will then come and deliver the baby either at home or at one hospital who works with them.
I was interested to hear what it was about so gave them my phone number to call me.

The next day she called me and asked a few questions about my history etc which is rounded up as follows

dc1 - high blood pressure mulitple hospital admissions but NO pre eclampsia delivered at 40+6 labour started naturally.

dc2 - severe preclampsia labour induced at 35 +0 weeks

dc3 - sever preeclampsia labour induced at 36+0 weeks

dc4 - high blood pressure no preeclampsia labour started naturally at 39+3, but I was on medication for abot 9 months after her birth.Had to see a cardiologist as my heart went crazy during the birth - no probelms found, should add have family history of heart problems.

The 2nd and 4th babies I was actually on my way for c section when they shot out - dc2 I was actually in the room taking the little whatever they are tablets and dc4 the epidural man (? - dont know the name of this job sorry!) was explaining to me I might not have time for one as my baby was distressed, poor epidural man was distressed himself when my baby suddenly appeared next to him on the bed but thats a whole other story anyway.

dc5 btw unplanned, not planned due to the above.

She realised that she doesnt work with our local hospital so then tried to persuade me that i am an ideal candidate for home birth (I am clearly not) when I said that surely I would need consultant care she implied that i could and perhaps should refuse or that she would come with me to prevent them pushing me into something i didnt want .

Then the worst part she said that if I didnt want to actually give birth in the hospital I could call her and then we could claim it was too late to go to hospital to have the baby - and she would deliver it at my house?! So an unplanned home birth.

To me this seems highly irresponsible I have nothing against home birth in the right circumstances but to me these circumstances are not it and to suggest that i could just ignore all of the above and perhaps risk mine and my babys life is ridiculous.

I am worried that she has actually persuaded another high risk woman that this is a good idea?!

I have a scan in a couple of weeks and i was thinking of mentioning it at the hosptial i go to (they wont work with this firm anyway) but am i just being over sensitive and should i forget about it?

You could contact the Nursing and Midwifery Council and ask their advice.

are you sure she is actually a midwife? i mean, was she "with" other people at the surestart centre or did she appear as if from nowhere?

She sounds mental and gives the profession a bad name.

I'd say defo mention it. This is what happens when profit making private companies get in on NHS. Scary.
:(
Good luck with #5!

Tell the Sure Start centre and ask to know who pays her wages.

i woul call the hospital and confirm that this scheme even exists. if it does then say you have spoken to (her name) and see if she actually exists.

if she does then complain big time

she was certainly a midwife, it was a big stand and I looked up the company it has been in the newspapers as a pilot scheme etc.

You are absolutely right, very irresponsible. Her company will probably bill the nhs a fortune for attending your home labour as well. Report her.

Report her, that's shockingly irresponsible!

Contact the local Supervisors of Midwives (via hospital if unsure how to contact). All midwives must have a SOM and this sounds like something which needs investigating by her SOM

Which company, OP? I would genuinely like to know. She sounds like she could have done damage to you and your baby.

linerunner I have a link to an article about them but im a bit woried about giving away who i am as it is a local paper and a local company. The article was written May 2011 so recent. I have deleted the words which identifty my town i am wierd about people knowing me on here.Blush but im sure anyone can find it from this anyway i just dont want to post it myself!

the bits which explain it but dont say where i am say

"The borough?s primary care trust (PCT) has approved an application from a company called ........... to provide a ?community midwifery service?.

But the move has been criticised by Labour as ?sinister? and privatision ?by the back door?.

.........Labour group leader Steve Foulkes said he was shocked by the move and added: ?There has been little or no consultation about moving from the pilot to a full blown service. It looks like the forerunner to many other services going out to private partners. The NHS is a public service and should be publicly accountable to public scrutiny.

?No elected member, as far as I am aware, has been consulted about this.

?The Coalition Government has put massive financial pressure on the NHS and they are having to look for solutions they would never have looked at before, and this is leading them by the back door to privatisation. It?s pretty sinister.?

The company would look after pregnant women throughout their pregnancy within the community, and would also be responsible for delivering home births"

OK I know where you are.

Everyone else, please don't 'out' the OP's location here.

OP, I'm going to follow this up for you, ok? No worries.

And nationally PCT are about to cease to exist, but we can try to ensure that the GP consortia that replace them know about this kind of stuff going on.

To be honest, telling organisations and government that 'the influential talkboards on MN are taking a political interest' does help to change things for the better on many occasions.

thanks LineRunner!
I am very shy in real life (well and on here sometimes) so i am not the type to normally complain but i do worry about people being persuaded into this sort of thing.

Powered, having been through pre-eclampsia myself, I know how dangerous it can be.

Good on you for posting.

Part of me wants to say 'live and let live' but under your circumstances no way! I had pe myself and won't be taking any chances again.

Not sure what happened to your babies, but when my son was born 4 people ran out of theatre with him to a waiting incubator... not just one solitary woman with a 'warm towel'.

You need to take this further, this advice is dangerous. Nurses have been struck off the NMC register for advertising their own business when they are working, it's a conflict of interest. I'm more concerned about the 'advice' that she has given you though.

MrsJRT · 30/07/2011 17:54

This has really annoyed me. What a stupid woman. It's a shame as well because schemes like this can be really beneficial for women.

Report
BornSicky · 30/07/2011 17:57

yadnbu.

i think this is shocking, awful and should be reported.

i also, like the OP, worry about other women receiving this kind of poor advice.

i really hate the privatisation of the nhs and this is exactly why.

Report
MrsJRT · 30/07/2011 18:02

Ok, go on the NMC website and there should be avenues to complain about her. I never usually advocate this but I think this advice that she is giving out is dangerous and could potentially harm other women and babies.

I had a home birth, so I'm not against them.

BUT (without wishing to be overly dramatic) you could die and/or your baby could die.

Definitely give birth in hospital.
Definitely complain about her - other women and their babies could die as a result of her terrifying 'advice'.
