I have NO IDEA about any of this. Honestly. Apart from the basics, which the consultant talked me through, which was something like

"we will give you drugs to produce lots of eggs and then we will knock you out and collect the eggs through your fanjo and then mix them with DHs sperm and make an embryo (hopefully more than one). And then put them in the oven and when they're ready we'll shove them back inside you. through your fanjo"

This is all I know. I'll admit I've been deliberately burying my head in the sand about it all though.

But I think now is the time has come to face reality. So would anyone care to share their experiences?

I'd like to know about all about the drugs - the types, how you take them, how often, side effects...

How many appointments you need. How much time off work I may need.

Er what will happen to my body. What will happen to my mind

Just EVERYTHING. Honestly no detail is too small or too trivial. I'd be really grateful.

Really just go back and speak to the experts and listen this time.

Asking random strangers on the internet what's going to happen to your body and mind isn't particularly helpful is it? No-one knows the answer to that here.

Again..if you want to know about the drugs, how to take them, how often and what the side effects will be, please ask the medical experts

Oh and good luck

That doesn't sound too helpful. You'll get excellent advice and support on the Fertility Friends forum. There are sections for different providers and cycles.
Best of luck to you!!!

Bit harsh worra this is new to OP and she would get a wide variety of experiences on this forum.

I was referring to the Dr not sounding helpful, not worraliberty!

I don't think it's harsh at all

Starting a thread like this as she's just about to enter into something so massive in her life, is (or can certainly be) akin to Googling illness symptoms.

At best it's likely to be misleading and at worst it could scare the shit out of her.

What Worral said. The doses are usually all different depending on each drug and each woman, as are the side effects.
Your summary of what happens is about right. Just do exactly what your clinic says. Good luck.

I was hoping someone who'd actually had IVF would share their experiences with me. I find the experts don't know everything as in general, they've not actually experienced themselves. It's like asking a male doctor to describe childbirth. They can describe it from a medical POV, but they don't actually know what it's like do they?

Hi, I did the same with my first cycle.
A good place to look it the CARE website bulletin board. It's public and you'll find answers to pretty much any questions you have.
But, basically - down regging (I had Buserilin injections) takes about two weeks, then about the same for stimming (I had Menopur injections) depending on how you respond (you have scans about every other day to check progress). It all takes about 8 weeks from your day 1.
I didn't take much time off - just about a week from egg collection day but it depends how strenuous your work is.
Hope this helps.

I don't think Worra was being harsh, this is serious stuff and the OP needs to know what's what from her own practitioner.

I'm sure hearing other people's experiences would be really helpful though.

Very very good luck with it OP, everything crossed that it works for you.

I do understand that OP but this part in particular worries me....I'd like to know about all about the drugs - the types, how you take them, how often, side effects

Just remember a lot of what you read on internet forums should be taken with a pinch of salt Smile

P.S I didn't find it too bad. Some hot flushes/feeling a bit flakey and some sleep disturbance. The progesterone pessaries that you use twice a day from egg transfer are a REAL treat though...

No the doctor wasn't very helpful TBH, he didn't go into much detail. I do have an appointment to discuss the drug regime next week.

I want to know about the other stuff though - possible side effects? Time off work? How much prodding and poking? Will I be crying in the loo at work? Will it fuck with my miiiiiiinnnnnnd man?

Yeah then it all comes back out so you have to lay down - not great when you're at work!

I did my pessaries up the bum as found the wax didn't melt out that way.... they said you could do it either way. I had my IVF done on the NHS and they gave me a sick note for the 2 week wait saying "ovarian cyst removal" so I didn't have to take any annual leave. My scans were all done at 7.30am so still got to work on time

It should say on the medicine labels of each drug how often you need to take them, how much, how long for etc. shouldn't it? If not then give them a call in the morning.

Bum or fanny, I don't know which is worse Confused
I'm paying for mine but it's being done at a NHS hospital, it's literally 10 mins drive from my work so very convenient, I hoping I won't have to take much time off at all, if any, but I don't know how realistic this is....

Suppositories go in the bum, pessaries in the fanjo.

I agree with worraliberty tbh. OP there is no way you should be embarking on what is a serious, invasive and potentially very upsetting course of treatemnt with the level of understanding you appear to have at present. Go back and shake your doctors till they explain properly and answer your questions fully.

Get some cycle buddies. Worra has a point, but nhs clinics can be very busy and some doctors do rush you (ime) through explanations.
