Do people really believe this ????????????

maypole1 - condoms do not prevent HIV/AIDS.

No, I'm afraid they don't Hmm Ours got lost in the bed last month and I had to go to Boots for MAP Sad

Only abstinence is 100% effective against pregnancy and stds, inc. hiv.

You cannot catch AIDS, it develops, if a man has AIDS then he would be to ill to have sex.

The debate on wether condoms are the answer as opposed to changing behaviour and the 'culture' is exceptionally complex.

Education pays as much a part towards saving lives.

Condoms are not 100% safe.

Condoms significantly reduce the risk if transmission of all STDs, but are not 100% reliable.

Just to add research at the moment is concentrating on how much of the virus is contained in vaginal and anal secrections, as most of the research has been male orientated. So knowledge is improving all of the time, alot of the specialist HIV doctors in the UK all spend time in Africa.

If I was with a partner who was hiv positive I wouldn't risk having sex even with a condom.

Maypole- you are male though, your risk is less, there is still a belief that sex with babies, pregnancy and herbal remidies stops the spread, so i can understand the reasoning behind abstinance.

But they don't protect 100% of the time. Same as they don't protect against pregnancy 100% of the time.

Condoms are not a guarantee, they just give you a much better chance of preventing pregnancy or std.

Could we stop this from being an ignorant attack on people with HIV.

There are people who have relationships long term with HIV positive partners and don't contract it.

They don't fully protect you no. It's not as simple as believing " I wear a condom therefore I can shag a million people and be ok." It's education that will iltimately fight the spread of aids and HIV. You are taking what that poster said out of context which is not right.

One of my voluntary jobs brings me into contact with people who are HIV positive and i attend their doctors appointments with them and also lectures etc.

Op- i take it you haven't posted for it to get offensive?

Condoms save lives. If you don't believe it, then god help you. It's an easy way to avoid HIV. And yes, like everything else, it is not 100%.

Report
maypole1 · 25/07/2011 23:01

Yes the education will be how to put a condom on correctly not Nfp people in Africa don't need HIVor any more children they need condoms and the pill many of these women are not snagging lots of people their husbands are the people they contact HIV from

And because the pope condemns contraception they end up pregnant time and gain with their children being born affected

Offensive toward people with HIV, i was on a thread quite a while ago and the posts were very offensive.

Is there a need to state wether you would have sex with someone who is HIV positive? It doesn't add anything to the debate.

I wouldn't have sex with anybody who had a bog standard std either Hmm Why are you getting all sniffy about hiv? It's a virus it doesn't require defending.

Birdsgottafly · 25/07/2011 23:05

The problem with that is that the husbands often have the attitude were they would wear a condom with their other partners ( in the case were they work elsewhere, it is the norm to have multiple partners) but the culture is that they wouldn't with their wife, who may not have any say in the matter.

Also girls who have yet not started their periods are thought to be immune and so protection isn't needed.
