I was posting about how the pope could save lives by saying yes condoms are ok then I got these as replies to my post.
Do people really believe this ????????????

maypole1 - condoms do not prevent HIV/AIDS.

maypole1 - I assume it is my comment you are refering to as stupid. Tell me this, do condoms prevent pregnancy.

I don't understand your post.

hiddenhome Mon 25-Jul-11 22:47:29

No, I'm afraid they don't hmm Ours got lost in the bed last month and I had to go to Boots for MAP sad

Only abstinence is 100% effective against pregnancy and stds, inc. hiv.

You cannot catch AIDS, it develops, if a man has AIDS then he would be to ill to have sex.

The debate on wether condoms are the answer as opposed to changing behaviour and the 'culture' is exceptionally complex.

Education pays as much a part towards saving lives.

Condoms are not 100% safe.

Your condom got lost in your bed ?????

maypole1 Mon 25-Jul-11 22:50:28

Well I would fancy my chances having sex with someone with HIV with out a condom

oiwheresthecoffee Mon 25-Jul-11 22:50:38

Ive seen the thread maypole i was shock. im hoping the poster meant 100% effective ? Surely ?

hiddenhome Mon 25-Jul-11 22:50:42

Condoms significantly reduce the risk if transmission of all STDs, but are not 100% reliable.

Birdsgottafly Mon 25-Jul-11 22:51:30

Just to add research at the moment is concentrating on how much of the virus is contained in vaginal and anal secrections, as most of the research has been male orientated. So knowledge is improving all of the time, alot of the specialist HIV doctors in the UK all spend time in Africa.

maypole1 Mon 25-Jul-11 22:51:54

I ment with out

hiddenhome Mon 25-Jul-11 22:52:17

If I was with a partner who was hiv positive I wouldn't risk having sex even with a condom.

Birdsgottafly Mon 25-Jul-11 22:53:45

Maypole- you are male though, your risk is less, there is still a belief that sex with babies, pregnancy and herbal remidies stops the spread, so i can understand the reasoning behind abstinance.

bubblesincoffee Mon 25-Jul-11 22:54:02

But they don't protect 100% of the time. Same as they don't protect against pregnancy 100% of the time.

Condoms are not a guarantee, they just give you a much better chance of preventing pregnancy or std.

Birdsgottafly Mon 25-Jul-11 22:55:02

Could we stop this from being an ignorant attack on people with HIV.

There are people who have relationships long term with HIV positive partners and don't contract it.

maypole1 Mon 25-Jul-11 22:55:50

I will takes my chances with a condom that with out

ScarlettIsWalking Mon 25-Jul-11 22:56:38

They don't fully protect you no. It's not as simple as believing " I wear a condom therefore I can shag a million people and be ok." It's education that will iltimately fight the spread of aids and HIV. You are taking what that poster said out of context which is not right.

Birdsgottafly Mon 25-Jul-11 22:57:34

One of my voluntary jobs brings me into contact with people who are HIV positive and i attend their doctors appointments with them and also lectures etc.

Op- i take it you haven't posted for it to get offensive?

hiddenhome Mon 25-Jul-11 22:59:42

Offensive to Catholics? hmm

DialMforMummy Mon 25-Jul-11 23:01:20

Condoms save lives. If you don't believe it, then god help you. It's an easy way to avoid HIV. And yes, like everything else, it is not 100%.

maypole1 Mon 25-Jul-11 23:01:50

Yes the education will be how to put a condom on correctly not Nfp people in Africa don't need HIVor any more children they need condoms and the pill many of these women are not snagging lots of people their husbands are the people they contact HIV from

And because the pope condemns contraception they end up pregnant time and gain with their children being born affected

Birdsgottafly Mon 25-Jul-11 23:02:13

Offensive toward people with HIV, i was on a thread quite a while ago and the posts were very offensive.

Is there a need to state wether you would have sex with someone who is HIV positive? It doesn't add anything to the debate.

maypole1 Mon 25-Jul-11 23:04:02

Yes just I can not believe people would advocate people in Africa do what cross their fingers and pray rather than the pill
And some condoms.

hiddenhome Mon 25-Jul-11 23:05:03

I wouldn't have sex with anybody who had a bog standard std either hmm Why are you getting all sniffy about hiv? It's a virus it doesn't require defending.
