Talking with DH tonight, I now feel rather silly Blush.

I always assumed it was black, like crude oil I guess...

As someone who has driven a car, and filled it up at the pump Blush am I alone in this?

Petrol's green-thats why it comes out of the green pump

My 4 year old thought it was green after seeing a few adverts. I can see why you thought it might be black though.

It's interesting when you Google images for 'colour petrol' that it is popularly believed to be a colour. Oddly enough, the blueish hue that is most often called 'petrol' is nothing like the yellowish or brownish transparent liquid that we fill our vehicles with!

Petrol is clear, as is diesel, though I can understand why you would expect it to be coloured

yanbu I thought it was clear, but now you made me think about it i'm not sure. Blush

It's kind of clear, isn't it?

But yes, I thought it was black for a long time. But then I also thought oil was black too and was surprised the first time I had to put any new oil in a car and realised it was a sort of honey colour....but then what do I know? DP despairs at my lack of automotive knowledge.....

Isn't it clear with a slight purple tinge?

Surely you'd know it's clear from when you throw put a bit on your BBQ to get it started. This is the reason why we now have a gas BBQ [grins]

I assume most people probably don't even think about it - you don't usually get to see it.

My (colour blind) DH thought that urine was green until it (bizarrely) came up in conversation and I informed him that this wasn't the case (we were early 20s at the time!) Grin

YANBU - just a little unobservant/uninterested in the properties of petroleum.

light petroleum distillate (petrol) has a straw colour.

dyes can be added e.g agri pink diesel.

if that seriously is all you have troubling you right now then I'd count my blessings if I were you!

I just thought I'd offer myself up as someone to laugh at a little Pleb

Main thing I'm worrying about tonight is whether a brown spot that's appeared on DS' foot is a birthmark type thing or an ingrown splinter. Really looking forward to taking him to the doctor for that one.

But yes, not too many worries, I am lucky.

See, I have far more serious issues than you, like did DS teacher notice he had the same pants on today as yesterday (they are the revoltingly bright ones Primarni have for sale at the moment so can't be too hard to notice), is there enough Marmite left in the pot for tomorrow's toast, is DH going to expect you know what tonight, etc etc. I can't be sidetracked by these petrol questions!!! (and I only know from filling up the lawnmower... Wink)

SpecialFriedRice · 22/07/2011 23:33

I thought it was a kind of light brown... Like apple juice.

So it's clear, huh? Learn something new everyday!

I think of it as being black, like oil, even though I know it isn't. It should be!
All I really know about petrol is

  1. It's a massive rip-off
  2. It smells really, really good.

Pleb- how did he manage to wear same pants two days in a row?

The smell of petrol makes me feel sick.

The petrol I pour into my lawn mower is clear.

he's 8, he dresses himself and I think rather than bother to find clean ones he just picked the previous days ones up off the floor where he had stepped out of them the night before. Boys are gross.

I thought it was black until I read this thread Blush

Sorry but saying petrol is clear, in chemical terms, is wrong as it is not a colour, but indicates transparency. If a liquid has no colour, it is colourless not clear. Sorry but after having had three years being continuously corrected on this for my degree I have become a bit picky about lttle things like this.
