AIBU?

to be a bit cross with a woman feeding from a jar in the baby room

The baby room in Boots is a bit of a squeeze anywy. It's a small room and they've crammed in two seats for feeding, two changing tables and a toilet cubicle. Just about enough floor space left for 2 buggies and accompanying parents.

Yesterday I went in with hungry DD, and a couple were BFing their twins on the chairs (well, mum was feeding, while dad occupied the other), so I didn't begrudge them both chairs. I leant against the changing table and latched DD on.

Then in came another woman with a 4/5 year old. Turns out this was the aunt 'saving a space'. 2 mins later in came the mum with the baby. Twin couple had now finished, and I said new woman should sit, as I was nearly done and DD would unlatch if I moved. So down she sits, and gets out a jar of baby food, which she proceeds to spoon feed to her child, cold.

So have I misunderstood the point here? I thought baby rooms were to give BFing mums a bit of privacy or FFing mums the facilities to heat the milk. If you're just feeding cold food from a jar, that can be done anywhere, and definitely in far more pleasant surroundings than a cramped baby room with a faint whiff of pooey nappies. I think I'm just miffed that she took up room with her extended family as well, when it was obviously very busy in that room.

Well a feeding facility should be open to all surely, would you rather she stood in the middle of the shop?

Perhaps she was going to change the nappy after she had finished.

YABU - I imagine baby rooms are for mums tending babies, be it BF, FF or jars.

Are you sure you are not just being a judgey pants coz she was feeding jarred food?

Can't see where she feeds your child is any business of yours. You had the opportunity to sit down and you declined.

Maybe she was going to BF or prepare formula after? Maybe the baby won't eat properly when there's loads of distracting things around? Gosh, who cares?

I think they are spaces to take care of babies, not just feed them in particular ways.

YABU - i wouldnt judge you cause you choose to BF your child why should you judge how other parents choose to feed? Everyone deserves to use free facilities for children not just mums of babies.
However, fair enough on the extended family - the room should not be a communal all hold especially if there is an adult to take care of the older child

Get over yourself...feeding is feeding.

Or did you expect her to feed the child in its buggy and change the nappy over her knee?

YABU.

I'm also a bit Hmm about the 'jarred food'. Something tells me you sound quite judgey on all aspects of feeding from your tone.

I think you need to climb down off you horse and get the message that most parents are just doing their best and you should butt out if you can't bring yourself to support others.

I think the dad should have let you sit down if you were trying to feed your baby and not bag a seat for the other women.

Not stand in the middle of the shop, but as yesterday was quite sunny round here and there's a park round the corner, I thought that might make a nice place for a sort of picnic for both children. Or the cafe. Or a hundred and one other places that don't contain a bin of poo.

And why would I have a problem with jars? After mine are weaned there are some jars in there for ease.

I just don't understand why someone would go to the least nice place, in the process inconveniencing others who have no choice, when a jar can be fed anywhere.

Breastfeeding can also be done anywhere! That's the whole point.

I don't understand. Why did you have 'no choice' but to use the room as a BF mother, yet the jar feeding mother did have a choice? Surely one of the benefits of BF is being able to feed wherever, whenever?

Well it's not for you to 'understand' why she didn't want to faff about and have a bloody picnic in the park.

She obviously wanted to get on with her shopping but had to feed and change her child first...in errrrr the feeding and changing room Confused

dreamingbohemian · 21/07/2011 12:00

Well, why do you want to breastfeed near a bin of poo? Why not breastfeed in the sunny park?

You say you have 'no choice' but to use the feeding room, I think that probably explains why you are cross and feeling possessive of the space in there. For people who think you don't need a feeding room to BF, it will seem unreasonable.

YANBU. Even though you didn't actually want the seat by that point, I can see how this would rankle. And, not wishing to hijack the thread but putting a big wig on and picking up my gavel on a related incident, I saw a mum trying feed her baby, who could not have been more than 4 months, a Quaver. (Baby spluttered and protested and was given a jar of something orange instead). I judged.

all those sunny, nicer places that you feel she could have gone to were available to you too you know. If it's ok for your baby to feed next to a bin of poo then why not hers?

YABU

But then I never used feeding rooms. as they always stink of nappies.
