AIBU - to ask......

Okay I know I am Blush but we have what is becoming a more & more worrying Attempted Child Abduction situation happening in our area - & I was surprised to have my Cousin who lives a long way from us tell me they've had the EXACT same thing there last year too - stopped recently & is now hitting our area & as this is the busiest section I thought it the best place to ask the question because

A. I wonder if my Cousins area is the only other part of the country this has happened in - bar another more local that I also know about - & wonder if the Police will be joining the dots across the country so to speakConfused

B. If its not then maybe its something we all need to be aware ofConfused

Its a black car, trying to grab kids & talk kids off the street into his car, outside Schools, sometimes 2 people in the car & 2 other incidents have been kids playing out - the latest attempt yesterday was 2 young girls on scooters right under their Mums noses - Mum ran after the Car, but the police seem to think number plates are being changed

So far this is the 5th local attempt & we've had warnings from Schools & all cases have been confirmed - on looking for news stories I came across articles in Crawley where the same thing was happening back in October & a similar incident happened recently in West Sussex too.

It it just my area, & other local areas & purely by coincidence my Cousins midlands area too, or have any of you had similar reports where you live too??

Thanks

Hmm there was something on the front page of the local free paper - haven't read it in detail yet though.
I also got an email forwarded from a friend supposedly an alert from the police about someone trying to grab women locally but when I went to the police website to check couldn't find anything about it at all! Hmm

Also heard about child abduction attempts on the school grapevine a few months ago in another fairly local area.
Now that you mention it, there does seem to have been a lot of these attempts recently. Shock

it is definitely the truth here - though did wonder the same as you at first - DDs Head had had a Police notification to warn us & be vigilant & have friends with Kids at 2 of the Schools it has happened at - confirmed by School & parents

Exactly the same as Pengymum. I heard two gossipy mothers talking about this outside my DSs primary school last year, naming places locally they wouldn't now walk or let their DC go near. I asked at the school office if there had been any concerns. No.

I looked on local news websites. Nothing. Sod this, I thought, I will ring the police. "Oh yes", they said, "that's something being spread on Facebook* ...Nothing like this has happened to any children in the county so rest assured."

Is this the Cambs area by any chance? I heard of this happening only recently.

Scary stuff.

Ones of the ones here turned out to be a false alarm in that the kids knew the person, but then turned out the local gossip was off on that one & the incident had actually happened nearby & was confirmed Confused

its been happening her over the last 2 -3 weeks

No, I'm Brighton & Hove - one incident in Lancing, & read an online Crawely News report that said it was happening there in October - my Cousin is in Notts & had it there up until October -

It IS being spread on Facebook - hence why I wondered if an urban myth - but we have since had Police warnings out to local Schools too & warnings from local Schools to parents & all attempts have been confirmed - thats is fact - so here at least it is for real, my Cousin insists the same her end too :(

Sorry just spotting bits of your replies I've missed Blush

There's been nothing in our local News either, again another reason why I didn't take it so seriously, - though bizarrely an ex local friend now living in Scotland said there was a mention in their local press - she more was worried as her kids were here on a visit, it was her I first heard it from & didn't take it too seriously at that stage - but what she had heard turned out to be confirmed as true

Thanks Dogs scarily that is pretty much exactly the same as whats been happening here, only more recent attempts have been more worrying, as seems they are getting more frequent & more determined :(

We did have a genuine case with 2 girls, sort of local, schools were notified etc then it triggered off some scaremongering amongst locals.

This is so odd. I had heard about the incident in MK on the local radio. Interview with a parent e.t.c. Is it always a black estate car? What age are the children?

Something very similar has happen in Manchester, black car two sometimes three blokes (one white two asian) going up to young girls after school and trying to talk them into the car was in the Manchester Evening News.

So those in the North West be vigilant was in the Hulme/Moss side area I think.

Oh. My. God.
This isn't right. Just google black estate car, child abduction and it's full. TBF there are also articles dismissing the notion as mass hysteria fuelled by forums and social networking, but there are also many police reports. Quite scary.

I'm sure there is hysteria & scaremongering amonst it too,but seems there are too many that are real for my liking Angry

Here its been older primary Girls between 10 & 12, the latest ones in a street are younger, 6/8 I think, the West Sussex one was 5, but that was a bit different in that a woman tried to coax her to let her lift her over the school fence - black car again though & the Crawley ones boys & girls between 11 & 13
