AIBU?

to think that my car insurance should have gone DOWN???

Sorry, never started a thread before and no idea if this is in the right topic....

But AIBU to think that over the last 12 months, given that I have not made a claim, my no claims bonus has gone up a year (it's ten years as it is!) and my one single speeding conviction has completely expired, that my car insurance shouldn't have gone up by TWO HUNDRED QUID?

My insurance company charged me £500-odd quid last year, which seemed reasonable as I live in a city centre, car is parked on the street and it is an easily stealable soft top (nothing fancy, just a cheapy Mazda). Nothing has changed yet I am now more of a risk to the tune of 200 smackers!

Is this down to these people faking claims and raising everyone's premiums as a result, the fact that they are now steering away from women getting lower premiums (although the law won't actually change till next year) or is it simply down to everything going up generally?

The Meerkat and Annoying Singing Man sites have come up with a few prices at roughly the same as last year but they are with insurance companies that I have never heard of and that review sites say are shite.......

Who do you have insurance with? Are there any obvious ones I'm missing that don't come up on these comparison sites?

Any suggestions gratefully taken on board....

xx

I think it probably is because of the poor menfolk complaining bitterly that their premiums are higher. I don't know what they thought was going to happen. Did they really think that insurance companies would lower their premiums?

So well done, them menz, you've just put yet more money into the pockets of the insurance companies.

Hello, I work in car insurance & we've been told by underwriters that insurance prems have gone up by as much as 40% in the last 12 months. Try Mazda insurance as well for a quote - 08448003612...

Btw, after 9 years no claims bonus, your discount comes to a halt Smile

This happened to me too! Try going direct to Aviva on line - not via a comparison site - they offered me three months free insurance - by far the cheapest quote I had - and better policy than i had before.

It's an Ahhhtrage!

Do the elderly still get discount insurance from Saga? If so, I shall complain that this is discriminatory also, as I cannot help when I was born and therefore should not have to suffer financial loss as a result!

Plus, I am less likely to crash into the back of the car in front because I am hunting through the glove box for Werther's Original instead of looking where I was going (albeit at twelve miles an hour, whilst wearing a hat)!!!!

P.S. I'm not actually stereotyping ALL people over 55, or whatever Saga's recruitment age is, I'm just having a rant at the inequalities of...well.....car insurance....Angry

Thanks, Jently, I knew the NCD topped off at some point but I wasn't sure when.

Thanks, dragon....I'll try the ones you both suggested.

Hi Painted, every single year I think the same as you, and every single year it goes up and even shopping around I am paying more than last year and more than the year before.

Watchdog did a feature on it quite recently and they said that one of the reasons is because of 'no win no fee'. The Insurance companies actually promote this quite aggressively. They featured several people who had been in accidents but had not ben injured. These people had no intention of falsely claiming and yet some had several calls trying to entice them into doing so.

But the insurance companies have to claw back the money from no win no fee from somewhere so it makes premiums for everyone higher. It's a viscious circle.

PS- This is my first post in AIBU so a day of firsts for us.

LV is worth a look too - £300 cheaper than my quote from the insurers I've used for five years!

Most insurance companies will try to charge you a huge increase in premiums at renewal as theybank on people not looking around. Obviously, this doesn't make any sense but this is insurance companies we are talking about! Have you tried to get a new quote from your current insurance company online? You may find that this provides a cheaper quote and then you can cancel the renewal of your current policy and take out a new one. If it isn't any cheaper (or they don't 'do' online) then some of the largest insurance companies do not use comparison sites (Big Red Phone and Nodding dog people). Also check with your own bank for a quote, sometimes you get a good deal depending on your bank account (package accounts) I would also be a bit wary of accepting insurance from a company I hadn't heard of but if you know what your looking for and are prepared to check the details then that shouldn't be a problem.

Do shop around - I had a joke quote from my insurers 2 years ago and dumped them after a search that bested them by £200, they got all hissy about it and tried to entice me back so I told them where to put it.

Am currently with Sheila's Wheels, 5 yrs NCD and my premium went down almost 10% this year. I still shopped around but they were the best. May not work for you in an urban area (am in nice leafy middle class area...) but there has to be someone out there for you!

Swift cover always do well for us, you just have to ignore the terrible adverts!

I'm with Swiftcover already, pantaloons....it's been fab as all I have to do is just print off a certificate if I need one, as opposed to having to find the original under 18 tonnes of crap in my beautifully organised filing system.....I guess Iggy is just charging more this year Sad

Christ on a bike, altinkum, my first car was a 1l Micra....I think the insurance was about 120 quid a year.....it's truly shocking!

I use a local insurance broker. They are cheap, but not the cheapest.

I used to use a cheap on-line car insurance company. However after a minor accident I found it a PITA having to call them when I had an accident and wait for paperwork, not speaking to the same person twice etc. After that I went back to the brokers as I can pop in and see them if I need anything.

I still check the other insurers at renewal time but they aren't much different so I'm sticking with the ones I know for the sake of a few £££.

I'm an underwriter and I'm afraid after years of everyone trying to cut each others throats with price comparison websites, etc. we've entered a hard underwriting market and everyone will see their premiums rise - probabaly a lot.

Did you know that insurance premiums can be negotiable?

I've had my car insurance and breakdown cover with Direct Line for several years and their customer loyalty department will offer a discount if you haggle discuss it with them.

Car insurance companies will automatically put rates up every year by huge amounts.

You need to switch. I found massive reductions on comparisno sites last year.

My renewal quote was about £200 higher than last year so I had a look at the price comparison websites and found cheaper quotes elsewhere. However I got the best quote from Admiral. DP 's car is insured with them, so I got a multi-car discount for insuring mine with them too.

PaintedToenails · 15/07/2011 22:14

Ooh, you're all really helpful! I'm so impressed! I had no idea you could haggle with them....can you challenge them to a double or quits challenge as well?

I think I'll just resign myself to spending half a day looking at the many you have all suggested.

Bloody car is a money pit at the moment...failed it's sodding MOT to the tune of 250 quid today! Still, mustn't grumble and all.

we had 2 cars on admiral's multi car policy - the quote doubled this year from last year Shock

I followed most of the info about getting the best insurance price on the www.moneysavingexpert.com website and got it back down to almost half of what the quote had been - ie about the same as last year.

I had to go with different insurers for the two cars but for that sort of saving was happy to! (Admiral had been very much cheaper for the first year of the multicar thing, obviously to draw us in) I ended up paying a bit more because I went for insurance with a couple of big name people that I had already heard of rather than the ones that I'd never heard of.

However when I rang up Admiral to cancel my policy and told them why they were able to match it (too late by then as I'd already paid for the other insurance) - the lady i was chatting to was saying that - especially if you say that you have several quotes around the cheapest price there is a good chance you might get it matched. I'd also put your details in again through their website and see what they would give you if you were a new customer so you can point out that they wouldn't have to pay any referral fees if they matched the price. But definitely worth asking them directly to match it once you have all the figures! Also then if they do get down to an acceptable price it is much easier if you stay with the same company as you don't have to start sending no claims certificates etc around!

good luck...

We've been with Axa for the past 4years since we first got a car and view their renewal quote as an opening offer. They always reduce this once we call or go to the office, so I'd say it's well worth picking up the phone. Although we're in NI so comparison sites pretty much useless to us regarding car insurance.

My car insurance goes up every year. I can't remember the last time it was static let alone went down. Sad

We are with Direct Line too, I always go online and get a new quote each year which is usually cheaper than the renewal one, this year it wasn't, but I still rang them and after a bit of discussion they knocked £50 off.
