live up a quiet road in a rural village which leads to a caravan site. was strapping DS3 into his seat lunchtime when 4x4 came along and honked horn for me to get out of his way ( he could have passed if we was a better driver, anyway) I signaled that I was strapping son in and he just said should have him on the other side then shouldn't you. the bloody cheek, I was parked by the pavement outside my own house.

I got in my car and then followed him to the caravan site and asked him who he thought he was etc etc etc. But of course he was in the right and did not apologize at all, so still feeling annoyed and want to go and put some ketchup on his precious caravan door handle tonight!!!!

Sorry but I think he was right. You should have been strapping your son in on the other side.

You were MAD to follow him, though. With your son in the car, too. People have been knifed to death for this kind of thing. Please, please don't do it again.

I think he's got a point too - why wasn't the car seat on the side next to the verge / pavement? especially if this is right outside your house

no need for him to be honking and rude though

YABVU!

You're also risking sounding like a complete loon.

agree with bupcakes.

I can't stand people with road rage.

As for the tomato sauce-do grow up!

He was in the right.

And I'm Shock that you actually followed him to ask him who he thought he was, etc. With your DS in the car too. Crazy.

He was in the right, and you were most definately in the wrong. You should be taking your child in and out of the car on the pavement side, not the road.

Then to chase after him and pull him on it is just complete and utter stupidity.

Report
FourThousandHoles · 14/07/2011 16:52

HE was being a twat but you must have been out of your mind to follow him. People like that rarely change their mind or apologise when challenged and you could well have put yourself in danger.

I do think you ought to park so that the child seat is nearest the kerb if you can. Doesn't matter whether you're parked outside your own house or not, there are dickheads on the road and it's worth being careful.

YABU and you were VERY stupid to follow him ...he could have been a total nutter. People have been killed or injured in situations like this...you have a baby and must sometimes put your rage aside.

Anyway he was right!

SpecialFriedRice · 14/07/2011 16:54

YABU to follow him as he could have been violent

BUT

You said he could have got passed if he tried. I'd go with mayo myself, its greasy and he might for a brief second think someone has cum on the caravan handle! (I'm easily pleased!)

What side the car seat is on is irrelevant. The car seat is probably on the same side all the time for ease and whether or not its on the road or on the verge/pavement probably depends on which direction the OP has come from when she parks.

you sound a bit deranged OP

Report
ceebie · 14/07/2011 16:57

Car seats should ideally be on the passenger side as it's likely to be a slightly safer position in an accident. It's not ALWAYS convenient to turn your car around every time to ensure that the car seat is on the pavement side, but best to try if you can - it's scary and dangerous having to put a child in and out on the road side. He was rude to honk. But if you were blocking the road, that was dangerous too. And VERY dangerous to follow him to continue the argument.

Ketchup won't happen, but I would enjoy it in a childish way!! I'm parked that way as otherwise i would have to drive further up the road to turn car around before parking. Also as I am strapping the youngest in myself he is quite safe - safer than letting the other older two walk out on road. We feel very safe in this area, maybe too safe as wasn't worried at all about following him ( he did have 2 middle aged ladies with him also, probably in a big rush to get back to the caravan for their morning read and bacon bap!) Obviously not grand parents yet though!!!

You should have just taken your time strapping your son into his car seat.

Bandwithering · 14/07/2011 17:01

I don't think she sounds derranged! obviously if she has three kids of different ages then they all have their own car seats which are different sizes and afixed to the car. You can't just put a small child in to whichever car seat is nearest the pavement.

I think the man was extremely rude. Thinks the roads were built for him. Heaven forbid anybody else should delay him for ten seconds. He sounds a wanker.

FourThousandHoles · 14/07/2011 17:01

I've had vocal altercations with other road users a couple of times, (never at fault myself, of course Wink)

If any of them followed me to my destination and had a go at me after the event I'd probably called the police tbh.

You were being agressive and scary just as much as he was

Two wrongs and all that...

Report
squeakytoy · 14/07/2011 17:01

So for the sake of driving a bit further up the road, you are willing to risk your safety. Confused

As for your older children, they just get in or out on the kerb side too and slide across.. there is no reason for them to get out into the road.

Bandwithering · 14/07/2011 17:01

ps, i wouldn't have followed him, but I would have been very annoyed.

skybluepearl · 14/07/2011 17:04

no he wasn't in the right. to always have the car seat on the pavement side would mean constantly swapping the seat from side to side in the bac for me. he simply had to wait a min or two - what the big deal.

if he had hit you trying to get past, he would have been the one in the wrong. you were a stationary object so to speak and he was the moving object.

skybluepearl · 14/07/2011 17:05

but no tomato sauce - that would be childish

YWBTotallyU to follow him and confront him about this!!!!! Are you bonkers?! He could have turned on you. It's never worth the risk of getting attacked by a potential maniac just to make a point.

YWBU also to get revenge on someone at all over this. I can kind of see it from your point of view but also from his, as at face value it would be more sensible to strap your son in from the other side of the car.

Report
basingstoke · 14/07/2011 17:08

Good Lord - you followed him? How very rude and aggressive that was. Far beyond what he had done. Why do people escalate things like this? Just apologise for holding him up - where's the harm? There's another thread a bit like this on MN this afternoon too.

How can you always have the car seat on the pavement side? OP said she lived in a rural village which usually means there is only parking on one side of the road. To ALWAYS have the car seat on the pavement side would either mean moving car seat from side to side or parking illegally.

However if it were me I would have closed the door over and let him past. It's not worth the bother.

Report
TheRhubarb · 14/07/2011 17:09

Um, I can see her point. Yes she could have strapped him in the other side but that means moving the car seat over every time as I am assuming it would depend on what way the car was facing? And what was so important that he couldn't wait 2mins whilst she just got her son into his car seat? There really is no need for rudeness.

I probably would have followed him too - no actually I would have made him wait even longer!

I wouldn't advise the ketchup as he will know you did it. Just take the consolation that he wouldn't have expected you to have followed him and confronted him about it! He might think twice before he honks his horn at anyone again.

Bloody rude man! The road belongs to everyone, not just to him!
