I've been given it, grown it and now it's time to share! I'm worried it isn't safe though, after hanging around for 10 days. I don't want to make friends ill!

I don't understand.

Is it Hermann?

BornInAfrica Tue 12-Jul-11 09:12:18

Haven't we just had one of these?

squeakytoy Tue 12-Jul-11 09:12:19

how do you grow a cake confused?

Scholes34 Tue 12-Jul-11 09:12:53

It won't make friends ill, but they might not thank you for having to have a bowl of cake mixture in their kitchen they have to feed and mix over the next 10 days. They'll just get their own back on your and give you a portion back in 10 days. If it is Hermann, it does actually taste quite nice.

It is Herman

Sn0wflake Tue 12-Jul-11 09:17:43

Still, huh? Can someone explain what it is.

FlubbaBubba Tue 12-Jul-11 09:28:04

It won't make them ill as long as you don't keep it forever. We did it (I had a lot of free time on my hands at the time!) and those we passed it on to loved it. It's weird and a bit 'friendship-letter' stylee, but it's harmless and quite yummy.

Sn0wflake it's basically an edible chain letter - you get given a fermenting batter and instructions on how to 'feed' it (adding ingredients etc), and after 10 days or so you divide up your mixture, bake your portion (and eat it if it's edible!) then you pass on the other portions to unsuspecting friends who start their own 'herman'.

Simples hmm grin

someone passed one of these on to me
sat on kitchen worktop for a few days
then I lobbed it in the bin

ggirl Tue 12-Jul-11 09:31:21

whoever thought it up needs to get a life imo

Dozer Tue 12-Jul-11 09:32:26

Bin it, is like chain letters, pita for everyone. Is opposite of friendship to impose cake mixing/feeding duties on people.

HengshanRoad Tue 12-Jul-11 09:52:38

Why is it called Hermann?

fiveisanawfullybignumber Tue 12-Jul-11 09:55:53

Oooh, I'll have Herman, I was given one years ago, it was lovely!!! We kept him going for ages, only stopped when we had to move. Never sure why it was called Herman though.hmm

TheRhubarb Tue 12-Jul-11 09:58:41

Herman the Cake

MorelliOrRanger Tue 12-Jul-11 10:37:06

I threw ours in the bin as well.

mizu Tue 12-Jul-11 10:40:31

ggirl - did the exact same thing, next door neighbours gave it to us and we left it and then chucked it, too much pain in the arse stuff to do. Herman the German cake

ThisIsJustASagaNow Tue 12-Jul-11 10:48:10

Ours went in the bin too.

Who needs blobs of old cake mixture doing the rounds?confused Cake mixture that has to be grown and fed? Ewww<vomtastic>

FoxyRevenger Tue 12-Jul-11 10:50:02

I've only heard of this on MN in the last week but the whole idea is rank. And twee. A friendship cake? Are we all 11?

ThisIsJustASagaNow Tue 12-Jul-11 10:51:38

It'll be rose petal perfume next grin

kaluki Tue 12-Jul-11 10:54:17

I made a Herman and it was delicious.
But I left the other 3 Hermans on the windowsill and the ants got in there before I could pass it on.
I was a bit relieved really because I couldn't think who to pass it on to.

TheRhubarb Tue 12-Jul-11 10:57:35

Foxy, it's not a friendship cake in the way you are thinking of. It's actually quite a nice idea. You are just passing on an old recipe to friends and neighbours. It should be called Community Cake really. I get the idea behind it, I really do. Just a shame that ours tasted mouldy.
