Watched the new episode of Torchwood online last night, and without giving away any actual plot details I feel obliged to tell you all that Gwen has named her daughter Anwen.

Anwen? You mean the same name that I deliberately earmarked for future use for my beautiful yet unconceived daughter?! HOW DARE SHE!

Sorry, but I deliberately hunted for ages for a girls' name that's a) Welsh in origin and b) not very common. Having lived in Wales for 21 years (with a DP who has lived in Wales for 23 and who speaks fluent Welsh), I've NEVER heard that name before. Ever. And as far as he knows, neither has he.

So I just find it all a bit too coincidental that a few months after I decide to name any future DD of mine Anwen, they decide to pick that name out of EVERY SINGLE BLOODY NAME IN THE WORLD.

So now, not only will everyone think I've stolen it off Torchwood, but there will be bloody loads of women watching it who go "Anwen?! Oooooh what a nice name!" and will then take it for their own! It'll be as common as Teagan or Megan! (There are around 12 each in my brothers' school, so that's all I meant by common, before someone starts throwing buns [hgrin])

So yes, I'm being very unreasonable. And I know it. But it doesn't stop me from wanting to hunt down the writers and gut them like fish [hangry] [hbiscuit]

I called both of my children old-fashioned names that I thought were traditional yet not over-used. Within 6 months of DS being born every other baby boy had his name and DDs name was more commonly used to start off with but not as much as after she was born, I think there are millions of them.

Tchootnika Nope, it just meant that whenever your name got called, 5 people turned round. You end up ignoring your own name because they're probably talking to someone else.

Well surely if a name's in existence, someone else is going to be called it, and bearing in mind the current universal obsession with unique names, other people are likely to have found it too, IYSWIM.
Surely, then there are 4 options:

1. Make something up (or do that thing people used to do with house/animal names - i.e bizarre hybrid of relatives names).
   
2. Choose something so hideous that noone else will choose it. (Similar to 1., IMO.)
   
3. Go for something so 'unimaginitive' (i.e. unfashionable) that by the time DC is in early adulthood, contemporaries will be sighing "Wow, Jane/Mary/Derek/Graham, that's soooo unusual - were your parents like, hippies, or something?" (or modern equivalent).
   
4. Go for something that you actually like and find meaningful, rather than joining mass scramble for 'originality'.

I love the name Anwen, I know a girl who has it as her middle name.
Tchootnika I don't think OP is scrambling for originality, I think she just objects to her future DD's name being pillaged by the TV addict masses. It would be like discovering and loving the name Charlene pre 1986...
