to think this seems to be following exactly the same pattern as the mens team and the U21s in the euros. Absolutely outclassed and completely bereft of any technical abilities when compared to continental teams.

France are playing better than them but they aren't doing a bad job and if thye can keep the energy going they might get something next half. #livesinhope

I haven't been watching (not a footie fan), but was aware it's on.

I had come across some commentary that suggested the women's team were rather better than the men's - is that not really the case?

Top of their group - in the last eight - a hell of a lot better than the England men's team.

Not that I've seen. But it's a very subjective thing to try and judge, they are quite simply two completely different games. The mens team are derided because of their failure yet the majority of the players perform well for top clubs. Also the expectation levels are different.
Then for the womens team it's obviously a smaller pool of players and the talent across the board is massively below the male game (to be expected really, smaller pool of players, the vast majority are not professional etc.)
So relatively there may be an argument to say they are out performing the male team although judging by this they face the same problems.

A lot of the women have to hold down day jobs.

They don't have the money in the English women's game that the men do (wages, gates, sponsorship). The 'inequality' in this fiscalm regard is more pronounced than the game in some other countries eg USA.

What's the score?

LineRunner · 09/07/2011 18:10

sorry, 'fiscal'

"Top of their group - in the last eight - a hell of a lot better than the England men's team."
Not really though. If they go out now they'll have gotten exactly as far as the mens team, i.e. eliminated in the first game after the group stage.
I think it just shows that coaching in England on a national level is ridiculously poor across the board.
England haven't strung 3 passes together today, Hope Powells tactics appear to be hoof it long and chase it, the commentators and pundits are ignoring the obvious short-comings much like they do for the mens team and a continental team is making them look very poor by simply maintaining possession.
If they manage to nick a goal it will be completely against the run of play and undeserved. France are playing them off the park.

What round is this? Quarter finals?

mayorquimby · 09/07/2011 18:18

Yup quarter finals. Could be interesting now as France will have to try and force the play.

Goalie for France is a bit clueless, n'est-elle pas?

But yes, countless times England have hoofed it away when there were 2-3 outlets to keep possession.

Does women's football have shorter halves? 40 minutes? Or is it the same nowadays?

Report
mayorquimby · 09/07/2011 18:21

The goalie for France has been appalling all game. It looks like they've let some competition winner play in goals in the world cup as their prize.

The England goalie not doing anything to dispell the stereotype of all female goalkeepers being rubbish.

fivegomadindorset · 09/07/2011 18:22

The men are paid too much to show any interest in playing for England, esp if managers make it difficult for players to fulfill England commitments, mens foottball is Club then Country, womens football is Work then Country.

Male commentators do say that, in the men's game.

handbags is a piss take in mens football. R5 live text even have an icon for it. ( maybe MN could adopt one).

In fairness the "handbags" comment gets said repeatedly in the mens game when two players do the posturing 'square up' that never comes to anything.

"The England goalie not doing anything to dispell the stereotype of all female goalkeepers being rubbish."
None of the goalies in the matches I've watched so far have really excelled.
