OUTSIDE the maternity section of my hospital shouted at me for no reason because I just looked at her smoking?

I didn't even give disapproving looks - just looked and then looked away as I walked past because I don't like the smell of smoke - it makes me feel sick.

As I walked away she shouted something like "YEA I'M PREGNANT AND SMOKIN' U GOT A FUCKIN' PROBLEM".

I didn't have a problem with her being pregnant and smoking....but I don't like people smoking RIGHT OUTSIDE hospitals so I have to inhale 80% of their tar as I walk past.

It hasn't really affected me in a big way, but I don't want the woman to think I was judging her - I was just judging her chosen spot for smoking. I also think the woman (actually girl) was quite rude....She obviously felt guilty for what she was doing.

AIBU..... :(

I would have said 'my problem?' i dont have one but your problem is obviously you cannot read - iirc you cant smoke on hospital grounds nowadays.

Is this Knock Smokers Week? We seem to have thread after thread after thread on the subject!

YANBU she obviously had a problem with her own smoking people who make a fuss about things normally do. Forget about its not your problem and btw I totally agree about people who smoke outside hospitals.

I hate running the gauntlet of smokers outside any building.

PS - Are you sure you weren't looking just a leeeeeeeetle bit judgey? Wink

Guilty conscience I would say. She knows she's harming her baby so inferred you were judging her too.

The staff at my local hospital were up in arms when the trust started enforcing the no smoking on the grounds rule. More so than the patients, as they just ignore it. Staff have to cover their uniform, get off site, smoke and get back in their allotted time. Patients just hover near the doors. Would love to see the patients herded the fifty metres or so off to the boundary too. Would make things slightly more pleasant when using the place.

I'm sorry but the poor child; mum can't be arsed to give up smoking whilst pregnant, mum who can't read or doesn't care enough to follow rules and a mum who shouts abuse at strangers!!!!!!!!

And I think I'm a crap mum!!!!!!!!

I'm pulling my judgey pants up so high my front bottom hurts a very lot!!!!

Its no different to walking past a bus stop or pub. Do you wear a gas mask to cross a main road or object to schools next to main roads?

Wouldn't be a problem if they provided a place for smokers to use.

Did you drive to the hospital? In a car? Or maybe get the bus, or taxi? All emit poisonous fumes. As do factories we walk past, and all sorts of other every day things.

She didn't need to be so rude but perhaps you did look a little judgemental without realising. Maybe she hates being pregnant!

You should have shot her. Clearly she is not capable of rasing a baby. I bet she smokes crack at home and will have her toddler mixing up her smack for her as soon as he is old enough.

DH had to physically prevent me from whacking a smoking pregnant women with my handbag the appointment we went to discuss my stillbirth and the chances of me ever being able to carry another baby to term.

Personally I think it's inexcusable to smoke during pregnancy.

I'm sorry about your still birth Cory, but it wasn't the fault of the smoking mother was it?

Is there any chance at all that you gace her a disapproving look? Even just a little bit?

You don't know why the woman was at that hospital, she may have had a reason why she was finding it too hard to resist smoking, and she may have had a reason that meant she didn't want to or couldn't walk all the way out of the boundary.

She felt guilty for what she was doing to her unborn child. Would not have shouted at you otherwise.

I'm sorry for your loss. I know what you mean though. I found myself thinking 'I did everything I could and my baby is still dead yet they are taking massive risks, its not fair' I really don't think you can expect completely rational thought from someone who's baby has just died.

Pregnant smoker putting her unborn baby at risk = Selfish

Pregnant obese woman putting her unborn baby at risk = Selfish

Yet if the latter had been stood outside Greggs eating a pasty, I doubt she would have been judged at all.

I wasn't wearing judgy pants, because I had just come out of the ward thinking about my scan so didn't really care about anything else at that moment of time! I just merely glanced her way and then turned my head away as I do when I walk past all smokers.

Silly woman!!!!

Harder to tell if an obese woman is pregnant though...
(I speak as someeone who is classed as 'obese' by my BMI)

Report
justkeepingheadabovewater · 04/07/2011 19:40

However, I ate extremely carefully during my pregnancy, and certainly never smoked or drank.
A bit different IMHO, than choosing to carry on smoking...
