to go into hollister with a Dragon Light....

DD s 14th birthday coming up, so today we did the obligatory trudge around the nearest shopping centre, as all she wants for her birthday is clothes.

spent an obscene £50 on a hollister zipped hoody....(ok, its nice, its soft, it feels good quality but...)

while scrambling around in the dark DH stood on my foot...(so dark he couldnt see where it was and he weighs 5 stone more than me - it bloody hurt!) and i had to ask an assistant to find the right size - she asked me if i had looked on the shelf - i said no - it was too sodding dark to see anything other than your hand in front of your face....

wtf is it with the lighting in there?? i am seriously thinking of taking a dragon light in with me next time....that'll wake the fuckers up...

aibu do you think? old fuddy duddy? or is hollister the emperors new clothes....?

You'll get used to it. In fact if your dd is 14 she's almost outgrowing it now. Jack Wills next (university outfitters my arse, I certainly got through London and Cambridge without need for their hugely overpriced garments), then Camden. That's when the fun starts! Dd is 15 1/2 and would never now go anywhere other people go!!

BTW, the unmarked shelves at the back of Hollister do carry some amazing bargains - have had loads of jeans for £10 a pop. For dd obv not me as I am far too fat to fit their jeans.

Hollister is a horrific shop in every way a shop can be. Urgh.

If you are too fat, you must be all of a size 12-14!

Only been in once with a friends daughter. My kids still too young. Had heard all about the shop (Bluewater one) but couldn't believe it when I went in. Managed to scrabble my way to the counter and asked the very young assistant for a vodka and tonic. She obviously didn't appreciate my humour even when I said 'oh its a shop is it, not a bar'. Told DH never to go in. He has night blindness - could get messy Grin

My neighbours daughter works in Hollister.
The idea behind the dark is that the parents don't like the shop but teens do so the parents want/need to get out quick so they buy something/anything!
Dont see it myself but it works apparently.
Hate the way they talk in fake american accents "Hi welcome to the pier"
You can't apply to work in Hollister, they don't advertise jobs they go scouting for staff and only employ "beautiful" people.

well next time then i will blind all the beautiful people - gonna nick a dragon light from work..

You can apply to work in Hollister but the interview is a bit brutal. But they do scouting as well.
They have to greet everyone who comes in the door "Hey what's up?". Only the most attractive staff get to be greeters or 'models'. (Basically a shop assistant who just walks around the store all day saying hello to people.)

My SIL works there and the bad lighting etc makes her really depressed. It's quite target driven too. And the pay is shite.

So at least I can sleep easier knowing that you don't get paid more for being 'Hollister Pretty'.

Not a shop I've come across but I like the darkness, means my fashion mad DD2 won't be able to see ( her night vision is lousy )

Bumping this as I want to continue the rant. They really are a shower of shite, aren't they? I told the check-out bloke that the shop was like the Seventh Circle of Hell, a claustrophobe's nightmare and a hideous shopping experience. He smiled politely and said you get used to it after a while. Meanwhile DS2 grabbed the bag containing his £60 hoodie and legged it out of the shop as fast as he could.

WTF are the thinking in there? And what are the shops meant to be? A dark, loud surfer's shack with random chandeliers thrown in? Someone somewhere has taken some serious drugs.

The appeal of it certainly works though... to a certain teenage market of sheep.

Hate that shop, not only is it dark and dingy, and ridiculously expensive, but its disablelist too. Our local one does not have wheelchair access. I am too fat to shop there Grin, but in 10 years time my dd might when she is 14.

That bloody place proves that every place of employment should have by law a maximum volume (and that includes bars and clubs) and a minimum lighting level to protect the health of their workers.

I thought there was a power cut when I went in with DD.
She was so humiliated I asked the assistant if they were going to stay open with the electrics down!
Dear God am getting old

I still want to do a MN flashmob and invade Hollister with an army of flashlights, sit on their sofas and knit.

Hate it, hate it, hate it. YANBU. You should go in there with DH and both wear miner's helmets with lamps on.

At our local one at the weekends you have to queue to get in. It's like the line for a nightclub with rope barriers and a bouncer type person at the front. QUEUE TO GET INTO A SHOP!!!!! Now I know I'm getting old.

I went to las vegas recently for the weekend and went into holister for my 14yr old dd,i couldnt beleive how dark it was either, took me ages to find too beacause there was nothing written on the outside of the shop, well nothing i could see at least.
I got some fantastic bargins,a pair of flip flops,a vest,3 t shirts and a bag for £87!

The staff in there will be claiming compensation in a few years time for ruined eyesight. Can't be good for them. When they leave work in the evening they must spend 10 minutes at the door adjusting to the glare!

Ok, lets put it in a bit of perspective! Can you imagine doing a job where everyone over 30 is coming up with the same old 'funnies' day in day out - the most common of which must be:

"God, it's sooo dark in here, how do you see anything"

"Oh I see it's a shop not a nightclub"

"Jeez, £60 for a hoodie, I don't think so - the size of it as well!!"

As someone has said, the pay is shite, they are just there to look good and follow orders, and I would be fucking pissed off if people said all of the above to me day in day out.

Stay out of there, let your kids go in - they love it.
