AIBU?

AIBU not to understand what this woman wanted??

I was serving on a till today and I had a customer that was chatting on her phone throughout the whole transaction. I don't really mind as i understand some people are in a rush and/or don't want to get off their phones when paying.

When the transaction finished she left (still on the phone) and bumped into a stack of shopping baskets ( they were not obstructing the walkway and were positioned where they always are) Her top got caught in one of the baskets and had a little fray at the hem.

She instantly got off her phone and demanded she wants to see a manager as she wants "something done about this"

I was still serving so i couldn't hear the entire conversation but a manager was called and she was demanding a refund for the top (it wasn't even bought in the same shop and was a completely different brand)

The manager later confirmed she was adamant it was the shop's fault and wanted some compensation or a refund.

AIBU to not understand how you could go to - say - next and ask them to refund you a top you bought in - say - monsoon??

I understand it would be a bit frustrating but i'd put it down to experience really.. but she kicked up a massive fuss about it..

what do you lot think?

i know it's not a very important matter but it just left me a bit baffled!

I was a waitress and had to put up with shit like this for ten years. My favourite was the drunk who stood on her chair, toppled over and then asked me if I realised she was a lawyer.

Did your manager give her the refund?

I think this woman thinks that she is very important and everyone should dance to her tune. She should look where she is going.

Years of working on tills have taught me that NOTHING will ever compare to the arrogance of people. YANBU. She should have looked where she was going, the dull cow.

It's just a pity your shop was out of stock of Manners and Good Sense.

How ridiculous. Why don't people want to take responsibility for their own actions any more. I hope the manager did not give her a refund.

Well, I think her reasoning was that something in your shop damaged her clothing.

Imagine if you went into a shop, sat on a seat, and stood up to discover your white skirt now had a blue patch because the chair was covered in blue paint with no sign to indicate that. The fact that you didn't buy the skirt there is immaterial - the shop has damaged your skirt.

It does sound as though the 'phone call had impaired her co-ordination and attention though, so I don't imagine she was very successful in her complaint.

I don't know if they're a comparison but DH snagged his jeans on a nail left hanging out at a theme park and got a refund for them, and I sat on some chewing gum at a cinema and got some money for a new pair.

Did she get anything for the top?

I have seen people ask for a refund on a whistling kettle because it makes a noise every time it boils. A 'silencia' hair drier because it doesn't make enough noise and Vitamin compound as it was faulty due to not containing any vitamin C. Hmm

No, she didn't, she has been offered an apology and they would have definitely given her compensation or a voucher if it wasn't her own fault but everyone else witnessed it and she simply wasn't looking where she was going! the baskets were stacked on something that doesn't move so they have always been in the same position!

I agree with animula, she will have asked for a refund or compensation for her damaged clothing because the damage was caused in your shop, not because the clothing was bought there.

Makes no difference though because it was clearly her own stupid fault, she shouldn't have been so rude as to stay on the phone while being served or so careless as to blunder into a pile of baskets while she was leaving.

My sister in law bought a bottle of bleach in the supermarket that was faulty and leaked onto her black trousers and leather boots through the bottom of the trolley as she was walking around the store. She was given compensation because it wasn't her fault.

The woman in your shop has no excuse, she should just be looking where she is going.

I was in a restaurant once when the woman on the next table ordered Caesar salad. Menu had a clear description and days suitable for vegetarians. When it arrived she went ape because there was no chicken in it. She demanded chicken, was very rude to the waitress and I think was angling for a free meal. I wanted to tell her if she couldn't read properly it was her own stupid fault (but I'm not that ballsy). With reference to Op, I agree, some people are just totally ridiculous. She should have been paying attention. She wants compensating cos she's not looking where she's going. Sue the person on the other end of the phone, sue your optician! Or just accept that accidents happen and concentrate on one thing at once!

Once a lady came in (charity shop) and wanted to donate some home videos she'd recorded. When the lady on the till told her it wasn't allowed, she got very upset and started to cry. She had an aide with her and it took 10 minutes or so to calm her down.

People have back stories and it's only about twenty minutes out of your day, which'll be better than theirs. It doesn't kill you to treat people who are obviously a bit "distant" with understanding.

I don't think you can describe someone who is as rude and unreasonable as the one in the OP as a bit distant. Unless you're planning on accompanying your reasoning with a swift kick up the arse, with pointy shoes on, to make her less distant.

I know that some people are just rude. But I've never met anyone (above 30 or so) who was really rude without realising it...i.e. unbelievable sense of entitlement. Most difficult people I know have something else going on.

I was in a restaurant, years ago now and the woman at the next table would not stop complaining. I think she must have had issues.

First she complained her lentil soup had legumes in it.
Then she complained that it was hot and asked for a fan (waitress got a fan)
Then she complained there was a fan sitting next to her.
Then she complained her husband's curry had spices in it.
Finally she complained that her ice cream was ice cold, she tipped it over the poor waitress who was already shaking with nerves.

She stormed off shouting at me for staring Blush. I was gobsmacked.

I haven't been a waitress for years. Some of the requests you got were impossible to meet no matter how hard you tried. My work was in a historical complex including a water powered mill and surrounded by farm land. We ground our own flour and baked everything in the bakehouse built in one of the out buildings. We had the grain, milk and eggs delivered direct from the farm in either that village or the next one. People actually complained we didn't get stuff from the supermarket or the wholesaler. We did occasionally but only stuff that wasn't available locally, it was how the place was advertised.
