AIBU?

AIBU to want parents to not swear when dropping children to nursery?

Just to let you know, yes I do have bigger things to worry about and I may be a bit PFB about the language my DS hears but I do believe there are times and places you should NOT swear and this really annoyed me today.

Was dropping DS off to nursery this morning and we were all waiting in the foyer for them to let us in. I wasn't paying much attention to what the mum behind me was saying to her DS until I heard "blah blah you little shit" It wasn't even in an annoyed tone of voice, just like everyday conversation. Then the mum next to me laughed and said "yeah punch him in the face" Hmm (I do wish I was joking but I am not).

Luckily DS wasn't taking any notice and some of the parents at the nursery are a bit, well, roughish, so no I didn't say anything but it annoyed me that they think its perfectly alright to talk like this in front of other children. Ok, if they must do it in front of their own (which I still don't like) but to just talk like that at nursery is awful.

AIBU to be annoyed by it and would it be OTT if I said something to one of the workers? In the last letter sent out by the nursery, there was a paragraph reminding parents not to talk about other children as they may have SEN or problems, so obviously some people have been saying stuff about other children within earshot of the parents.

YANBU at all. I hate it when people speak like that within earshot of DS. You are certainly not being PFB! I think that you would have every right to talk to the manager of the nursery about it. It does reflect on the nursery, too, after all, imo.

I think over the last few years mind that swear words have become just another part of everyday life, just like the words and, if, and but.

I don't like to hear people swearing around children, hate to hear children swearing more, but as you said up there- it wasn't in an annoyed tone, its just every day language to a lot of people

Maybe you need to change nurseries? That certainly doesn't/wouldn't happen at my nursery!

YABU to think you that you can do anything about it, people swear, some people swear around children, it's pretty trashy but no real solution.

Oh yes, I'm not even talking about walking through the smokers all stood at the corner, where there is no where else to walk through.

Sometimes I think in my head "thank fuck for that" when I hand DDs over at nursery Wink especially after a particularly stressful breakfast argument over who gets the feckin' penguin knife or pink plate! :o , but I try to refrain from saying it out loud :o

No, YANBU

No, it's not OK and YANBU. My DS' nursery is full of 'roughish' families who have it really tough and I don't hear any swearing during pick up/drop off. And I know many of the parents are smokers and they don't smoke then either.

YANBU. I overheard part of a conversation between the deputy head of our nursery and a parent, with her saying that she had heard him swear and would rather he didn't whilst in the nursery building.

I'm with flubbba on this one, and it's also occurred to be that it's a positive advantage to have a language other than English in these circumstances, as I've definitely heard Polish exclamations that sound a bit more than 'oh dear' Grin.

We started a swear box for a dad who often used swearing as part of his normal day to day vocabulary. It didn't work sadly as at 2 his son told me to Piss Off.

YANBU to want them to stop, but YABU if you think your wants should control what other adults do.

YANBU; I had a row once with a couple of ladies in Superdrug! Xmas shopping with DS he must have been about 11 or 12 and there were two 'ladies' behind us when every 2nd word began with 'F'. When I turned round and asked them to refrain from their swearing in front of DS I was just given a lot of abuse and told that he would hear it anyway! Just as I was about to lose my temper Wink, a couple of young lads (about 18) stuck up for me and told these ladies that I was right and there is a time and a place! Made me see young lads in a totally different light

YANBU - I think you should mention it to the nursery.

It's depressing isn't it, and YANBU. I bet they do it semi-on purpose to rile other parents. I heard a mother at the local park once yell to her sons 'come here you f*8king animals' and wallop one of them on the backside

YANBU.

Conversation I heard the other day...

You're not going to like this....oh no, you're going to fucking hate it....yes you are....you're going to fucking hate your car seat..... etc.

Place: Maternity ward. Words spoken by a father to his newborn baby. He'd been f'ing and blinding for a good 2 hours at that point (probably longer). I was just glad to see the back of them.
