AIBU?

To not offer to have the cat for the day?

DP and I do not live together and he is in a house where he's not supposed to have pets. They're not allowed. He refused to get rid of the cat though and always said when an inspection comes up, he'll just chuck it outside and hide all its stuff Hmm.

Anyway his first inspection is this wednesday, he'll be at work. His worry is that he chucks the cat out before he goes to work and when the inspectors go into the house, the cat runs in making it obvious it lives there!!

His first solution was to take it to work with him!! he works in a supermarket so this means the cat would be left in the car all day. I said he can't do that, as much as I hate the little fuckers, you can't risk it dying in a hot car like that.

He never actually asked me, but I think he's hoping I'll offer to have the cat here for the day. AIBU to refuse? I REALLY do not like cats, I have all new furniture here and I'll be out wednesday meaning the cat will be left to its own devices in my house.
AIBU?

Tell him to put it in the cattery for a couple of days. :)

He can't afford anything like that.

Another thing, I suspect it has fleas as he is buying a load of flea killer stuff lately!

I'm sure you'll get lots of yabu's but I don't think you are at all (cat owner)

He shouldn't have a cat if it's against his lease. There are many catteries he could use, and as you don't like cats I doubt you'd be able to care for it well anyway. Not deliberately, just because you don't know how. And you shouldn't have to learn unless you choose to!

If he cant afford anything like that, how would he afford vets bills if the cat got ill? Confused

I don't think he would squeakytoy. It's not insured or anything - he'd probably assume the PDSA would sort it out.

YANBU and he should grow up. It's only a bloody cat. Take it to the vet and say goodbye to it.

Agree with squeaky - if he can't afford cattery fees how would he afford vet fees?

He's already fallen out with one neighbour who said if it keeps shitting in his garden he'll report DP to his landlord! Don't know why he just doesn't get rid of the bloody thing. I love dogs and I'd LOVE to have one but

a) I can't afford to give a dog the care it deserves
b) I won't have the time to give it what it deserves and
c) I don't want another responsibility on my shoulders.

PDSA, I think the cat is actually registered there already.

Cattery fees in this area are £5 per day, what are they like around your area? However, they only take cats which have been routinely vaccinated for the various ailments.

Karen, because I don't have to live with it. If I go to his house, the cat is outside. We'd never live together whilst he has "that".

We live in a fair;y expensive area of Surrey but even here the cattery is only £8 per day including food, surely that would be his best solution?

It will cost him a lot more if the inspector discovers he has a cat and the landlord either starts proceedings to remove cat or your DP

ok lorenz but when that one is gone he might want another one?

Is he a brilliant cleaner? Because it's really obvious when a cat lives there if you don't have one.

PDSA won't help unless you are on benefits. If he works then he may not qualify. Cattery will not take the cat unless its vacinations are up to date which doesn't sound likely.

I have 3 cats. I clean very fastidioulsy and have a cleaner, however you would still be able to tell we had cats. They are a nightmare for fur, especially at this time of year.

Take the cat to yours and shut it in your kitchen with a litter tray. Make sure you leave it some sort of bed, preferably covered as it will be stressed and want to hide. In a kitchen it can do minimal damage tbh.

Sounds like he is a cat lover though so your issue might continue past this cat. Also - you do know they can live into their twenties so you maynot be moving in together for some time.........

If it'll only be for a few hours, so why not?

Get it some tuna fish and lots of cat nip. It'll take care of itself.

He should take you out to dinner somewhere nice in return though.

Tbh, I think landlords who insist on no pets/children shouldn't be landlords.

Board it for a day or two. It will need to be up to date on vaccinations and they will ask about when it last had flea preventative.

They'll smell it a mile off. Houses containing cats always do, regardless of what the owners think.

If I had a DP who needed a favour, I know what I would do... what does this say for your relationship if you are not willing to help out for one day with a pet he clearly cares for? Its just a day afterall, and you said you would not even be in so what difference does it make to you? what permanent damage would it do to you if you offer to take the cat? And what permanent damage could it do to your relationship if you do not offer to take the cat?

I love cats, but think that having one when it's against the lease is idiotic. Leave your partner to it. He'll either come up with something or get caught. Either way, it's not really your problem.

OP can he really not afford cattery fees? I have never had a cat, but kennel fees for the dog are c. £12 a day.

Could you lend him the money?

If you can't, honestly, I'd do what a PP said and take the cat for one day, lock it in the bathroom/ kitchen with a litter tray and some food and water. It'll survive. I am not keen on cats either but wouldn't want someone I loved to get into trouble.

And maybe help him do a deep-clean vac-ing and get some aromatic candles to get rid of the animal smell!

Also have to say I think having a pet when you are not supposed to is just a recipe for HBP. At our old place, the agents said we could have our mum's dog stay for afternoons etc but apparently didn't bother to confirm this with the LL, and I was horrorstruck when the LL turned up one day without prior warning and found the dog there! That was not a nice conversation. Just too stressy....
