AIBU?

to think that children should be weighed in and out of PYO farms?

I was laughing with my parents earlier about how when my brother and I were small they used to pay pick-your-own farms an extra £5 for the fruit that hadn't quite made it to the punnets as we left covered head to toe in strawberry and raspberry juice. I think it would be quite a good idea for PYO farms to weigh children under 10 as they entered and again as they left and levy a 'fruit' charge for any gain :o AIBU?

One of the PYO farms near here had to stop doing it and offer only ready-picked punnets, because people were taking the piss. The anecdotal evidence of families turning up with pots of cream in which to dunk their strawberries was not unheard of. When I take DD to one which still offers the regular PYO service I teach her that eating them before paying is stealing, just like if she eats grapes in the supermarket, before they are weighed at the till. Otherwise, they'll all end up closing down. Yes, they probably do factor a little bit of pre-eating into the price. But it's just the old story of giving people an inch and they take a mile.

LOVED strawberry picking when I was young!! Mum filled punnets and me and my brother ate what we picked!! Been with DD who does same as I did- the strawberries are not cheap but I feel guilty now!!!

I hope so. I'm sure half the interesting fruit leaves the farm partly digested. My mum also made me and my brother pull up weeds to partly offset the cost of the fruit we had eaten Hmm

Whereabouts are you? There's a good search tool here

Taking cream with you is a bit much! Why not go the whole hog and take a picnic rug?! :( !

My sister and I were such greedy pigs when we were kids we actually came back from strawberry picking with an allergic reaction because we'd eaten so many Blush

Shock at people taking cream! At least we felt semi-guilty about it and paid!

Hmm. You would have to factor in if the child had drunk water, or gone to the loo.

I used to love PYO. There is one nearby that we haven't been to, must go with the DC.

Last time we went PYO it was eye wateringly expensive because of the extra price they'd added on for EYO pickers.

I used to live overseas and was stunned when a friend took me to a PYO strawberry farm. We weren't allowed to take any strawberries home with us, but we were each given a portion of cream on the way in. Shock Grin

PYO I knew in Surrey about 20 years ago actually did this. Don't think they ever charged anyone, but it certainly deterred too much scoffing!

the one up the road from us has scales and threatened to use them last years... to check that the DD's actually had eaten plenty while picking! They had the right attitude as far as I'm concerned
