to explain, the court staff tended to be middle class. But the defendants were mostly working class. Cant they catch the middle class wrongdoers. ? (I only only ask the questions....vicky derbyshire would like to be a judge

I would suggest that there is a higher incidence of crime amongst the population on a lower income.

Whilst that does not mean that the "middle classes" do not commit crime, it means that when you take a snapshot of a court waiting room the chances are there will be a majority of people who would fit the social stereotype of the lower classes.

GabbyLoggon Sun 19-Jun-11 16:12:22

messy across the bulk of cases JPs courts are 85per cent w.c defendants.

I supposepartofit is middle class have something worth staying legal for.

GabbyLoggon Sun 19-Jun-11 16:13:43

mamarth yes, you got it brother, or sister. or anyplucking thing inbetween

GabbyLoggon Sun 19-Jun-11 16:15:07

OF COURSE THE mc IN PRISONS GO TO OPEN PRISONS.....WE HAVE A TWO TIER SYSTEM FOR GOOD OR ILL

messymammy Sun 19-Jun-11 16:15:36

Perhaps the mc can afford better solicitors than legal aid will allocate to wc?

TheStallionOfSensibleness Sun 19-Jun-11 16:16:05

no one gets legal aid any more ( hardly) so thats a non starter too.

redexpat Sun 19-Jun-11 16:16:24

Well the jury are a random mix - surely that's the most important part?

Also probably depends on what kind of court you were in and what kind of cases you heard.

TheStallionOfSensibleness Sun 19-Jun-11 16:16:53

id say most defendants are either from incredibly damaged childhoods/families

or

are just pretty thick
this crosses all classes.
the kind of ingenous criminal just rarely comes into it.

messymammy Sun 19-Jun-11 16:17:20

oh ok.
I'm out of explanations so!

Mamaz0n Sun 19-Jun-11 16:20:00

though i would say that just because a person has become disaffected that doesn't mean he is necessarily WC.

Drug abuse, DV, familial breakdown, job loss etc. They are equal amongst all social classes and are equally debilitating. Someone may well appear at court in dirty clothing, signing on and possibly high. His home may well be the well to do road you aspire to live on and he has just spent many years rebelling against his very MC upbringing.

Basically, appearance is not everything.

Andrewofgg Sun 19-Jun-11 18:18:57
