YABU. It's a nice gesture stop being a misery. If when your a grandmother on mothers day and your grandchild who imagine you would adore did that don't say it wouldn't seem sweet and lovely.

My girls made my dad a card and i got him his own "special grandad" cup for him to use when he comes here. Its not exactly the end of the world?? We dont celebrate "grandparents day" so mothers day and fathers day accounts for nanas and grandads too.

Did your DH send his father a card? Possibly this is a subtle hint.

my kids get my dad cards and things, and he's coming for dinner.

your op is a bit sad and i have a little tear in my eye now

Well my dad got things from grandchildren as well as children, - he's got alzheimers so doesn't really have any idea what's going on, - but I wouldn't begrudge him a card and a few sweeties from his family.

I think the concept of 'Father' can be stretched to include those who were the fathers of us and our spouses.

this i believe is the bottom of the barrel of AIBU threads. get over it!

Well in my case my Dad was universally crap, and it was my Grandad who did the "work" so Father's day is always Grandfather's Day to me!

All the op has said is that she doesn't understand why her mil has done this. I wouldn't get it either. It's up to your husband to send his dad a card. Does he?

Surely by definition a grandfather is a father too? YABU

exactly trixy. talk about nitpicking. its a lovely thing to do and so not worth getting a hump or having to "understand" it.

YANBU .... Hallmark invented grandparents day in September I think it is!

Fathers day cards are for children of any age to give their father.... Name says it all!

Sounds lovely. Didn't occur to me to get my own father a card from ds as well as from me but I usually get ds to write in the card I send. Only I'm a crap daughter this year and forgot to get my Dad a card anyway. Blush I have been VERY busy in a brand-new job though...

Regardless of the reason the OP's MIL did this, it's a simple way to make both MIL and FIL happy, with no effort required from the OP. Result.

We give my Mum a "Granny" card on Mothers day from my DDs....it's nice! She's a Mother...a granny or Grandfather is a parent too.

I agree with you, OP, it's not necessary and it's a bit odd. It's not for your MIL to decide to do it either, it would be you or DH... Confused

Yes, a grandfather is a father. Doesn't mean everyone will feel happy with setting up routines where fathers and grandfathers and mothers and grandmothers get cards on those days as well as birthdays and Christmas and anniversaries and heavens knows what.

There are lots of ways to show fondness and consideration without having to remember cards for every tenuous 'special day'.

scuzy · 19/06/2011 11:43

but the MIL got the card. whats the harm??? sigh

Yep, I give my DS's grandparents mothers day and fathers day cards. Why not? It's a nice thing to do. It's not even as though your MIL asked you to buy one. YABU.

Well the MIL bought the card -so she wasn't expecting OP to shell out.

Its not a big deal surely - if a card will make him smile, why not give one?

YANBU I agree with Lyingwitchinthewardrobe

It is fathers day. He is not father to your children...

Report
TheOriginalFAB · 19/06/2011 11:45

YANBU as there is a Grandparent's Day but would it really kill you to let your child scribble on it?

It would make your in-laws very happy.
