I'm just getting ready to go to a 'cocktail party' for an aquaintances birthday at her house. We are expected to dress up in cocktail dresses, bring spirits and fruit juices and have been advised to eat before we arrive as she doesn't want to put on food for up to 40 people. I have had a pizza so I won't be hungry but that is not the point, I will be sat with no drink OR food as I am driving (too far away to get a taxi). DH is saying we have to go NOW. We are expected to arrive at 6pm. AIBU?

I suppose it is a drinks party then. I'd be grateful for the warning, rather than getting three tiny pieces of things to eat and that's it, at least you've had pizza. Try to enjoy it.

6pm is VERY early to have a no-food party, surely there will be at least breadsticks or something? Drinkers need some subsidence!

Tbh I wouldn't go to a cocktail party if i couldnt drink there. Being sober around drunk people is not fun, AT ALL.

I'd suss out the nearest KFC en route. You might be there till midnight and then you'll be hungry.

pigletmania Sat 18-Jun-11 17:41:20

I agree, 6pm is very early for a cocktail party where food will not be served. I would say the best time would be about 8pm when people would have eaten dinner. They should at least have some finger foods or nibbles about. Its good of them to let you know, you don't have to be early, you could be fashionably late smile

Eating's cheating! wink

thegruffalosma Sat 18-Jun-11 17:42:23

Well I assume you will have something to drink just not alcohol? You'd still have to put up with tipsy people if there was food on and you've already eaten so I don't see where the problem is?

TheOriginalFAB Sat 18-Jun-11 17:42:57

Don't go. Send DH if he is that bothered. Life isn't long enough to do the things you want too without wasting it on things you don't.

pigletmania Sat 18-Jun-11 17:43:08

Please note the feminists who bang on here abou, that women should be able to drive and not rely on men, well poor op is stuck being the designated driver, at least if you don't drive you are not in that position smile.

pointydog Sat 18-Jun-11 17:44:20

What's wrong with not eating or drinking alcohol for an evening? Have a few juices. Take some peanuts. Give over.

pointydog Sat 18-Jun-11 17:45:03

Why do people need to eat all the time?

catgirl1976 Sat 18-Jun-11 17:45:20

YANBU. Your friend is a terrible hostess

sophe29 Sat 18-Jun-11 17:46:58

Sounds dull as ditchwater and the hostess has got a rather good thing going on. If you are throwing a party, you should expect to provide something other than the location for your guests. She has gotten out of not only not feeding you, but getting you to bring her lots of booze which Im guessing will be left at hers if its unused? Great way to stock the drinks cabinet.
What next? Are you expected to wash up the glasses afterwards also?
Fake a migraine.

SuePurblybilt Sat 18-Jun-11 17:47:28

You're driving for ages, bringing your own drinks and mixers for a party hosted by someone you don't know that well? And no grub? I'd be giving it a miss altogether tbh. You don't sound like you really want to go?

hiddenhome Sat 18-Jun-11 17:47:44

Sounds like it's going to be a really lame party imo hmm

Are they swingers by any chance? Perhaps she doesn't want to be bothered with food because there could be hygiene issues grin

MorallyBankrupt Sat 18-Jun-11 17:49:09

YABU just because I hate the word 'fed' being used in relation to a human.

Only animals get 'fed'.

turdass Sat 18-Jun-11 17:50:20

Sounds like a shite party to me.

hiddenhome Sat 18-Jun-11 17:51:16

Humans are animals though aren't they? hmm albeit, animals with a few more manners.

I like it when dh feeds me 'cos it means I don't have to cook that night grin

HooverTheHamaBeads Sat 18-Jun-11 17:51:20

A drinks party starting at 6pm should have nibbles (lots of!) offered, definitely.

Even drinks parties at 8pm should still have some nibbles IMO.

I don't think it's very responsible not to offer some food when offering alcohol for those having 1-2 drinks then driving.

Fifis25StottieCakes Sat 18-Jun-11 17:52:10

Yanbu im with turdass, doesnt sound like much of a party

hiddenhome Sat 18-Jun-11 17:52:18

I'm tellin' ya, it's a swingers party. Nobody wants crumbs down their pants hmm

pigletmania Sat 18-Jun-11 17:54:25

The hostess does sound really mean expecting your to bring your drinks and eat before the party. What's she doing? Don't both having a party, if you are not prepared to put effort into it hmm I would not go, sounds shite.
