to expect a rechargable item to come with a charger

Bought a rechargable item off eBay and it arrived with only a car charger, no mains charger. The box says it should have a mains charger but the seller says it didn't come with one. They didn't put on their listing that it was missing. AIBU to want a refund? It will take me forever to charge it in my car!

Yeah, it depends what it is. Lots of items come without things that it looks like they should come with. Printers come without USB cables (pisses me off no end), iPods come without mains chargers, etc. Does the box show a picture of the charger, or does the description actually say the charger should be with it? If the latter, check the eBay description very carefully.

bigdig Sat 18-Jun-11 10:03:56

Doesn't say much, just says 'includes car charger'. I say as they havn't stated that there is no mains charger and the box clearly says it should have one it's their fault.

TidyDancer Sat 18-Jun-11 10:06:58

Not necessarily. If the listing didn't specify, and you've only discovered what the box says when the item has arrived, I can understand why you're annoyed, but it's open to interpretation whether the seller is in the wrong. And since they have provided you with a charger of sorts, I don't know what you can do....

musicposy Sat 18-Jun-11 10:09:12

I don't think you have much of a leg to stand on just because it says it on the box - it's what the seller described that counts. I think if they said 'comes with car charger' that would actually imply there isn't a mains charger.

It does annoy me, though. I couldn't believe when I spent £££ for my tomtom there was no mains charger, only a USB. So you spend all theis money and then you have to spend loads more on accessories. It wouldn't hurt manufacturers to put in mains chargers and a case with expensive items.

But I still don't think you really have grounds to be cross with the seller, sorry.

bigdig Sat 18-Jun-11 10:09:46

All the other ones on eBay come with a mains charger.

musicposy Sat 18-Jun-11 10:12:16

I don't think you can use that as comparison either, annoying though it is. The seller has described their item. The fact that there are loads of others on there that appear to include more; well you should have chosen one of those instead. Was this one cheaper? That's maybe why.

musicposy Sat 18-Jun-11 10:14:20

What I'm saying is, YANBU to be pissed off, but I think you would be U to complain or leave negative feedback. In future, check these things very carfully before you buy.

bigdig Sat 18-Jun-11 10:18:00

My gripe is that they didn't say it doesn't include a mains charger when the box clearly says one should be included. It is not something I would use in the car so why would I only want a car charger?

TidyDancer Sat 18-Jun-11 10:18:03

bigdig, what did the listing actually say? Cut and paste the text if you need to. But if you're going to raise an issue with the seller over this and you want opinions before you do that, you're going to have to be clearer with us about what was actually said in the listing, since that's the 'contract' part of the purchase.

MorticiaAddams Sat 18-Jun-11 10:19:31

YABU, the listing specifically only says car charger. That would have flagged up a red light with me and I'd have asked about the mains charger.

bigdig Sat 18-Jun-11 10:21:32

'Still Brand New, only used couple of times, Includes in car charger' - after looking at it again, then I think the fact that they've not said there's no mains charger and are stating the item is 'still brand new' then it is their fault.

I suppose it is also my fault for buying an item with such a crap description but I needed the item quickly and this was a resonable price for being 'still brand new' and was ended soon.

bigdig Sat 18-Jun-11 10:22:24

Morticia - the listing doesn't say only car charger, it says 'includes car charger', that does not imply that there is no mains charger to me.

MorticiaAddams Sat 18-Jun-11 10:31:04

bigdig, I understand that and to me the fact that they had specifically mentioned the car charger would have sounded odd and I'd have e-mailed them.

If the item itself is brand new and the car charger is included then I think you should just chalk it up to experience as it is as described.

TidyDancer Sat 18-Jun-11 10:36:38

I think that does imply there is only a car charger tbh. In future, I would ask specifically about this kind of thing, but while I still understand why you're annoyed, I don't think you've got grounds to actually do anything about it.

bigdig Sat 18-Jun-11 10:43:26

the box says 'includes mains charger' therefore they should have said 'only includes car charger' or something like that,

TidyDancer Sat 18-Jun-11 11:57:10

Did the listing say 'includes mains charger' though? Or was there a very good picture of the box on the listing, so that you could tell exactly what was said on that?

I'm not at all suggesting that you're wrong to be annoyed, but as for whether you have grounds to raise a case with the seller on eBay, for me it hinges on the above.

browneyesblue Sun 19-Jun-11 01:12:42

As they described the item as Used, the item should have been complete - you should have received the charger.

Auction items that are incomplete should be listed as For parts or items not in working order, which eBay defines as:

An item that does not function as intended and is not fully operational. This includes items that are defective in ways that render them difficult to use, items that require service or repair, or items missing essential components. See the seller's listing for full details.

I would get a refund.

browneyesblue Sun 19-Jun-11 01:13:48

Oh, and I notice the seller is auctioning an identical item with the same description!

musicposy Sun 19-Jun-11 01:32:24

browneyesblue, if you are not bigdig, how do you know who bigdig bought it from?

If you are bigdig, a bit lame to come on here and back yourself up when everyone else says YABU.

OvO Sun 19-Jun-11 01:40:16

If the item originally came with a mains charger and I didn't specifically say on the listing that it wasn't included I'd expect the mains charger. yanbu.

browneyesblue Sun 19-Jun-11 01:45:26

I looked on eBay to see whether it was listed as Used, or for parts. Not exactly rocket science to find the seller.

I'm not bigdig; I just don't think it's unreasonable to expect an item to be complete if it's listed as used.

bruffin Sun 19-Jun-11 01:59:45

The OP has not speicfied what the item is, so I don't understand how you could have searched for it browneyes.

browneyesblue Sun 19-Jun-11 07:16:13

I was on eBay last night when I read this thread. I did a quick search to see if I could find any advice on the site (because I knew it covered this situation), and came across a current auction that I knew must be the same seller.

In my haste to offer advice before turning in for the night, I had only skimmed through the thread and didn't realised that the OP hadn't given full details of the auction - from the replies I read it stupidly appeared to me as if others had viewed the item page.

I apologise - my only defence is that I was rushing, and in RL I work online and am used to just doing a quick search to find the answer I'm looking for blush

So, no big mystery really. I'm not the OP. I'm probably not musicposy or bruffin (and just talking to myself). At this time of the morning, I'm only about 64% sure who I am...
