AIBU?

to think that a vegetable curry from a restaurant should not contain...

amongst other things; sweetcorn, kidney beans and sprouts. In addition to less weird things such as carrots and potatoes?

Don't get me wrong, I've put some fairly random things in a curry myself but I don't expect people to pay me £6 for it...

AIBU?

sweetcorn and spouts are veg so whats the problem? (well except I wouldn't eat sprouts if you paid me)

What's wrong with that? All vegetables, all in a curry and all cost the provider money, as well as the cost of power to cook them for you.

Sorry - YABU.

So are pumpkins but I wouldn't expect them in a vegetable madras...

cherryburton pumpkins are fruit are they not?

I have had this in the past and it's not acceptable to me either! Just as I wouldn't expect sprouts to be in a veg lasagne.

Bloody hell, really?

So, if you ordered say, a meat pie, you wouldn't mind if it had beef, chicken and antelope in it so long as it tasted alright?

It depends on whether it is a middle class curry or not, and thus has it's recommended daily allowance of fashionable superfoods :o

Sounds rank, Do you mean brussels?

Report
hopenglory · 17/06/2011 08:34

pretty much, yes. Unless I specifically ordered a chicken pie and then it turned out to be antelope.

Am I missing something. I don't get it. It's a veg curry and it had veg in it?????? Why would you have an expectation of what veg went in it. I mean there is posh curry eg asparagus or cheap curry frozen veg but it's still veg curry.

Report
Tortington · 17/06/2011 08:40

well in a meat pie, i would expect to find beef - cos thats the socially acceptable thing - we all know it

similarly if i ordered a vegetable curry i don't expect it to contain lettuce. If said veggie curry had to have specific ingredients - non of those you mentioned seem out of place to me - then i would ask

So what should a veg curry have in it? Your meat pie comparison doesn't really hold up....

AfternoonsandCoffeespoons · 17/06/2011 08:49

Well I can see your point that is it unusual, maybe, but that doesn't really make it wwrong, does it? I once ordered a chicken and veg pie from a cafe, and the veg was bean sprouts, sweetcorn and red pepper!! Was suprised, but not disgusted.

Vegetable curry is the description of a dish containing vegetables.

Meat pie is the description of a dish containing meat.

Can't see what your problem is!

I thought you were going to say 'fish sauce' or 'prawns'.
YABU. Our local indian varied the veg according to the season - and I think they use a lot of frozen veg. I don't think I have had kidney beans in a curry before, but I have certainly had sweetcorn and sprouts, and it was lovely.

Sounds horrible but I suppose technically it's as described.

No, I get your point (I think). I get sick of veggie options from restaurants where a random selection of veg is bunged in to a lasagne, curry or pie, regardless of flavour, texture and compatibility.

It just shrieks 'I don't eat this rabbit food, don't understand why anyone else does, and can't be arsed to bother'. I resent paying for that.

(25 years + as a veggie now and even less tolerant than I used to be...)

I would expect a traditional vegetable curry. I don't think sweetcorn and kidney beans come into that category. Sprouts would be ok if they were sliced up like greens.
You're not being unreasonable OP. I probably wouldn't complain but I probably wouldn't use that restuarant again.

Punkatheart · 17/06/2011 09:01

My mother is Indian and no - it is generally not done. These are clearly cheap options - ones you might do at home but not have in a restaurant. I would not eat curried sprouts...blimey you would be jet propelled all the way home!

I agree with you OP. But as it is all veg, technically you have no grounds for complaint. But there are more places now that offer good veggie alterrnatives, so try and steer your friends and family to one of those.
