to think that hot tubs are just festering pools of bacteria

dead skin cells, stray hairs and possible bodily fluids. I just don't get why people 'relax' in public hot tubs surrounded by other semi naked strangers.

hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm but soooooooooo much fun.

Tee2072 Wed 15-Jun-11 13:17:14

How is that different from a swimming pool?

microfight Wed 15-Jun-11 13:20:03

I think it's the intimacy of the little pool, much less volume of water and the fact the water is at a much better bacteria breeding temperature than swimming pools.

It's the backyard ones that get me. How funny!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe Wed 15-Jun-11 13:22:27

Definitely not being unreasonable... I hate the thought of them. Like being slowcooked in your own (and everyone else's) juices.. confused

ThisIsJustASagaNow Wed 15-Jun-11 13:22:58

Maybe.. but couldn't you say that about swimming pools too? I thought they had to use lots of chemicals to keep them clean.

Whenever I've been in one I just want to laugh - it seems such an absurd thing to do and hot tubs have that sort of sleazy image which is squirmy. How people have them in their homes and invite their friends round for 'parties'....the mind boggles.

I just feel like a new potato being boiled in a pan whenever I've sat in oneconfused

Yes the backyard ones are hilarious. I remember seeing a couple on come dine with me and they thought it was a good idea for a group of middle aged strangers to put on swim suits after a three course meal and 'relax' in it.
Truly bizarre.

MardyBra Wed 15-Jun-11 13:24:03

I just don't get the point.
Although on a previous MN thread I learnt that they are considered popular with swingers.

grin at 'feeling like a potato boiled in a pan'

Our friends (who are def not swingers) have one at home. We all pile in (kids love it)

Usually before a 3 course meal though wink

RidinOnAPig Wed 15-Jun-11 13:25:08

I once got a right nasty rash on my back from one.

microfight Wed 15-Jun-11 13:25:19

At least swimming pool have a purpose to them to swim in!

LadyBeagleEyes Wed 15-Jun-11 13:25:30

I had a friend once who worked in the leisure centre of a hotel, who would never use one again after seeing what comes up when cleaning the filters.
Used tampons was one and loads of body hair.

microfight Wed 15-Jun-11 13:26:10

How do you know they're not swingers wink

AlsoAvailableSober Wed 15-Jun-11 13:26:55

Well if they are, they don't fancy us grin

They are a bit gross, so I just try and not think about it! And always shower afterwards.

The chemicals are probably far worse for you than bits of hair and dead skin cells, but the chemicals are the thing that kills all the bacteria so I doubt there are many germs in most of them.

ThisIsJustASagaNow Wed 15-Jun-11 13:32:24

This has reminded me of an incident I had in a hot tub once.

I always think the sight of people getting in and out, for those already sat in a hot tub is rather tmi on the visual front. A large arse backing into a hot tub is quite a thing to behold.

Anyway, a less than petite old lady was doing just that with me already in. She slipped and sort of landed on my head and sat in my lapshock

I've viewed them with extreme caution ever since. (Old ladies and hot tubs)

Glitterknickaz Wed 15-Jun-11 13:34:37

did anyone see the video where that girl sharted in one?

HowlingBitch Wed 15-Jun-11 13:35:08

Don't ever swim in the ocean if that's how you feel. confused

toddlerama Wed 15-Jun-11 13:37:06

My parents had one, but my mum realised quickly that it was like human soup and took to scrubbing it out each time it was used shock

Obviously that was a right pain, so no-one was allowed in it. They finally had it taken away this spring after more than 5 years of it sitting unused. I liked it and would have taken it off their hands but we're in rented and couldn't really fit it properly. Or afford to run the beast. grin

Gingefringe Wed 15-Jun-11 13:37:28

EEk they make me squirm. Last time I used one at our gym a load of older blokes piled in so it was a bit of a squeeze. This one chap kept touching my foot with his (innocently I think) but I just hate touching feet!! I got out pretty quick and haven't been in one since.

Our friends have one - we often go in there..........it's clean, there is chlorine etc etc in it......we all wear swimming cossies and it is great - the kids love it, it's really sociable.

Wouldnt want one myself but it's great ocassionally going in theirs!
