Our neighbours have gone on holiday for a couple of weeks and asked us to keep an eye on things for them.

I could hear a funny noise in their garden and it turns out they have left on all their garden lights and water features AND (I can see into their kitchen from the garden) their hob, oven, microwave and kitchen TV on standby, rather than turning them off. Lights everywhere!

Now I know it's their money they are wasting, but I think this is a ridiculous waste of energy. I'm not an eco-warrior by any means but I am really angry about this waste of energy while they're not even in the house. AIBU?

Id be more worried about an electrically fault, and a fire

I do think it is a waste of electric though.

Go in and turn everything off, I presume they've left you a set of keys? Grin

You could try getting angry about all the office/shop/christmas lights left on constantly, that are far more of a drain than a few piddly standby lights?

Are they trying to make the property seem occupied, put off potential burglars?

My DH once turned the TV off at the wall when we went to his parents for Christmas. Came back to find all the Christmas TV specials that we hadn't been able to watch at Inlaws hadn't recorded because the SkyBox was also off.

I nearly tore him a new arsehole.

Could their outdoor lights be solar powered?

Lights not solar powered (black cables coming out of the house for them, ditto the water "features".

No keys!

Main TV is (I presume) in the Living Room? So no idea why the kitchen TV is on.
Or the hob and oven!

My local Town Council is proposing to turn off all streetlights between 1am and 5am (no problem with this) and simultaneously proposing to light up the Cathedral with spot lights! Insane!
