AIBU?

to wonder what happened to the quiet (financially) times of the year?

There was a time when there was Christmas when scary amounts of money got spent, and there was the summer when we had the family holiday and MOT and car ins etc. The rest of the year the little bits left over every month would build up so that we had a cushion of money left over for the hard times. And we could afford the odd meal out or trip to the cinema.

There aren't any easy times now.

Once I've paid the balance on the holiday (only a cottage in Wales not 2 week cruise somewhere hot and luxurious!) we are going to be brassic!

I've just been through our budget today and there is nothing left over! Diesel costs my about 100 a month to fill up the tank. Groceries are costing me about 20 a week more than they did a few years ago. Water rates are eye-watering (we could have a meter but I doubt it would be cheaper with 5 of us). Went to the cinema as e half-term treat last weekend - £44 for 5 of us Shock

I consider us very fortunate in the income we have but honestly....I might have to start taking in washing Confused

Anyone want to buy a 14 yr old? Good at X-Box and knows a lot of boring fascinating stuff about films and old games consoles. Also plays guitar. Doesn't smell often.

I know what you mean. I have a big family also - loads of nieces and nephews so that means lots birthday presents every month and now that dd has started school she has other birthday parties to go to regularly as well. I seem to spend half my disposable income (money left after all bills have been paid) on presents. Sometimes I just wish I had a bit extra for stuff for me - you know, the odd good haircut or some new work clothes!

God, don't mention birthdays! 12 significant (ie needs present and card) b'days since Jan. Plus mother's day and easter.

There doesn't appear to be any time in the year to 'build-up'! I have just had my car renewal through - it is a quarter of the value of the car and the no. of window envelopes and demands coming through is alarming ....
