Itg great fun, if you're nervous, sit on the back with your arms around him while he goes up and down the street sowly a few times. Your first proper ride shoud be on a safe route where he should not go very fast like around some country lanes. Seriously, have been riding pillion for years and its amazing!

Dh has a motorbike and bought me a helmet and declared 'oh you love it!'

I lasted 20mins and asked him to take me home- he was keeping to the speed limits and I still had white knuckles.

He respected that motorbiking is not for me.

I had a biker boyfriend in my younger and wilder days and I loved going places on the back of his bike. Do it, it is great fun. Just make sure you wear the right kit - proper head and body protection, etc.

Don't think I'd want to do it either! Soooooo dangerous! Everyone I know who has ever ridden on one has had an accident to some degree, from scrapes to a broken neck and so death!

I know it's dangerous, but do you think it's any more dangerous than riding a horse? I used to ride a lot when I was younger, dressage, cross country etc.

Not if you are parents. The risk of both of you being wiped out is too high. In fact I think all parents of dependent children should avoid high risk activities altogether.

It is fantastic fun and once over the 'being nervous' bit you might find you love it..

But...... You really need to stress to your DP just how nervous you are, I've seen so many people put off bikes by going on the back and having the rider 'show off' and scare the crap out of the pillion to the extent they won't every get back on a bike.

Why not just ask him to take you to the end of the road and back, or around the block. Also make him promise that the minute you want to get off he will stop the bike :o

butterbur statically (sp?) you are more likely to be seriously injured or killed riding a horse rather than a motorcycle. Motorcycle accidents are just publicised more.

I loved riding pillion when I was younger (in my 20s and 30s). Even kept going out with a boyfriend long after I knew it was over really as I hated to give up the motorbike riding.

I still miss riding pillion as dh is too chicken sensible to ride a motorbike nowadays.

I did however do too much riding pillion too fast along winding mountain roads in Italy as a teenager in the days when no-one wore helmets!. I shudder thinking back on it now

No tips really other than you need to trust the rider. I never rode pillion (even when very young) if I didn't think the bike rider knew what they were doing and were very competent riders,

I always loved it and wanted to ride so if you don't feel like that maybe you shouldn't do it . Motorbikes are quite dangerous really so I can completely understand why someone doesn't want to ride them.

Also I think horse riding is dangerous too but I liked doing that when younger as well.

Love horse riding. In part cos it is a bit dangerous. Hate riding pillion on a bike as feel very out of control. Used to have a moped, which was fun in the sunshine and in quiet / no traffic. Personally, if you really don't want to, don't do it. If you're not sure, a short ride with correct gear, with DP agreeing to stop as soon as you ask and to take it easy. You might love it!
