to ask library to remove sharp table from their childrens section?

I visited our local library with dd (2yrs) last week and she managed to acquire a spectacular black eye after falling off a small chair onto the edge of a low, fairly pointy-edged table whilst trying to grab another book. I was standing right behind her but she moved so quickly i couldn't catch her in time :(
We were in the baby/toddler section which we have visited many times before without major incident, apart from dd trying to escape a few times.
Luckily there was no major damage done (got her checked by the doctor just in case, as a major lump came up ).
I was surprised that the staff did not have an 'accident book' that they have to fill in, what with it being a public place. At the time I was a bit freaked out by the whole thing so didn't ask whether the table should be removed.
Please let me know what you think - she is my PFB (although now also have ds, 11 weeks )

Don't know the legals re accident books etc but I think it would be reasonable to advise them of the accident and request for the table to be removed and replaced for something more suitable. I think that to be common sense in a children's department. I don't think it PFB.

I honestly don't think you can remove every pointy sharp object from everywhere. Kids trip when they are toddlers and you just have to "patrol" with them I'm afraid

There was a thread on here ages ago about a woman who wanted to sue a hotel because they had a sharp coffee table in the lobby and I think her toddler had walked into it or something - that thread ran for ages!

Depending on budget, though, they might not be able to replace it, so it comes down to whether it would be better to have that table or no table.

You could suggest table corner protectors?

I don't really think it would be reasonable to ask them to replace the table, but you could ask whether possible to add corner guards in the children's sector? Not absolutely necessary imo, but they might not mind if they've got the budget for it and if doable.

dn (3) fell and smacked lip off coffee table with nicely rounded corners last week and still needed 3 stitches inside her lip. Accidents will happen.

If the table top was broken and therefore had a pointy bit sticking out then YANBU for asking for it to be removed until it was fixed again. Otherwise I think that you are being AbitU because if you look around probably every inanimate object has the potential to cause an injury. Hope your dd's ok

Thanks for the replies. Sorry i forgot a couple of details - i blame lack of sleep! dd was sitting on the chair and somehow over-reached and kind of fell down the gap, knocking her head on the table. She is a tiny thing and has special needs (not walking yet). This is the first incident where she's 'properly' injured herself - guess i'm going to have to get used to these tumbles.
She is fine now apart from the bruise.

Um, I have never seen a table with an un-pointy edge... Are all the tables in your house ones with unpointy edges? If not then I'm afraid YABU.

i suppose most tables do have pointy edges , i wonder if they could replace it with a softer almost cushion-like thing so that the books could still be displayed? Now i'm really sounding like a loon! For some reason i keep thinking of that Mr Soft mint advert?!

I guess a world like that is teh only one that would be completely safe for our dcs, but alas, the world is not like that! Accidents happen unfortunately, and tables do tend to have pointy edges! They should have had an accident book though tbh

Overall I think YABU, but it wouldn't do any harm to talk to the staff. Maybe a simple rearrangement of the furniture might prevent such accidents. I'm sure they'd be happy to listen to you.

As you probably know, libraries are suffering deep cut backs at the moment so I doubt they'd be able to buy new furniture.

I believe that the library should have taken details of the accident under law, apart from that it was just an accident, they do happen, and I'm sure your dd will get over it and onto the next!!!
