Smoking and dogs not on a lead at busy forest park

I am a childminder and was at a forest park today which was very busy with half term kids and parents / carers / childminders.

One woman had a cigarette at a picnic table which was full of kids and adults. So firstly, AIBU in thinking that she should have moved away from everyone if she wanted to smoke even though it was outside? Considering the number of children around I think she should have moved, but then we were outside. I detest the smell and am getting over a lousy cough so the smoke for me was horrendous. So I fear I may BU about this!

Secondly, another woman had a staffie running around fairly close to her, but the dog was scaring my childminded kids. The dog did not jump up or growl or do anything other than run around madly like dogs do when they are excited. Second AIBU: to think that again because there were so manyt children around the dog should have been on a lead? The notice board at the forest said dogs to be on leads or closely supervised. This dog remained quite close to its owner, but did run around very excitedly.

Aibu in both instances? Fear I may be.....

Yes, on both counts YABU. Sorry.

Numberfour Thu 02-Jun-11 17:07:32

Mrsdonkey, no need to say sorry!! I thought I may be, but needed some MN help in deciding!! Must say that I am very glad that I did not say anything to either of the people concerned!

Shoesytwoesy Thu 02-Jun-11 17:08:49

anything else, you seem to have a list

BooyHoo Thu 02-Jun-11 17:09:52

yes yabu

she was outside. it is legal to smoke outside.

teh dog was being closely supervised and as you said was only running around, not growling or jumping.

Numberfour Thu 02-Jun-11 17:12:39

nothing else, Shoesy! just those two things!! i would have added more had there been anything else.

And as I said, I thought I may be unreasonable. Just needed to check.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie Thu 02-Jun-11 17:14:12

Mybe the rules should be that nobody else is allowed to leave the house at the same time as you op ? wink

Ephiny Thu 02-Jun-11 17:15:36

Sorry to say YABU - I don't like the smell of smoke either, but people are still allowed to smoke outside, yes even when there are children present! And sounds like the dog was being supervised as required and not causing any danger or nuisance.

YANBU to be a bit stressed by it all though!

yukoncher Thu 02-Jun-11 17:18:48

The dog was being closely supervised so she was following rules.
The woman was smoking in the open air!

You need to find a good cause to direct all this outrage to, like maybe take up protesting against deforestation or something?
Or something worthwhile complaining about?

Numberfour Thu 02-Jun-11 17:21:40

yikes! "outrage" ? Hardly outrage, Yukoncher. Just a reasonable request in asking if I was being unreasonable. i suspected that I WAS being unreasonable, and I now feel that I HAVE been. Annoyed by the smoking? Yes. Outraged? Nope.
Mildly concerned about a dog running around, yes. Outraged? Nope.

Maybe it's because it's been warmer than 'normal' today, and it has frazzled you a bit ?

Things that wouldn't ordinarily peees you off, have.

Don't worry about it. It's nearly the weekend ! smile

redflagsahoy Thu 02-Jun-11 17:22:04

YABU OP maybe you are just feeling a bit withered today, cheer up have a large vino or a biscuit smile

worraliberty Thu 02-Jun-11 17:22:23

Did you check the food the children were eating?

If you had, you might have been able to add "AIBU, there were Fruit Shoots and chocolate biscuits in their lunchboxes" grin

Thingumy Thu 02-Jun-11 17:23:09

I think they should build smoking rooms in open air spaces so us smokers can be fucking left in peace.

TheFlyingOnion Thu 02-Jun-11 17:23:44

YABU but, you know that already... smile

TheFlyingOnion Thu 02-Jun-11 17:24:21

grin @ thingumy

Bananamash Thu 02-Jun-11 17:24:29

YABU on both accounts, I'm afraid

Numberfour Thu 02-Jun-11 17:24:34

grin worra! with the crisps and haribos I fed my lot I hardly think I could comment on that!

redflag - I am oh so withered.... that glass of wine is a good idea. Will pop the bottle in the fridge now.

YANBU, some days people just get on your tits grin Take your Dog, and YOU take your manky fags and FEKK........OFF the pair of ya !!!!!!

Salmotrutta Thu 02-Jun-11 17:29:48

Were there no people drinking beer or illegitimately parking in P&C spaces?
Or women breastfeeding publicly?

hogsback Thu 02-Jun-11 17:31:40

YABU about a well behaved dog.

Where is the forest park? If it's one of the Southern ones they are all as dry as a pharaoh's sock at the moment and I think the rangers would take a very dim view of smoking.

Numberfour Thu 02-Jun-11 17:33:50

Oooh F A B U L O U S idea about smoking rooms for smokers!! (I am an ex-smoker - the worst kind of non-smoker, I am led to believe.)

Salmo- no beer swilling, I did not check the illegal parking (mental note to do so next time) and no boobs on display (or none that I noticed). Is your disappointment at not being able to read a post about breastfeeding? Thought my heading was quite clear? wink
