To think that MIL should have bought her something??!

My DD is 9 months old. Mil has just got back from a 2 week stay in New York.

The shopping capital of the world, ish.

She came back with a keyring for DH, nothing for me and nothing for DD.

Really?? Not even a t shirt??? I'm a bit fuming. About DD... Not me!

Icelollycraving Thu 02-Jun-11 00:08:51

She isn't likely to notice at 9 months old!

jasper Thu 02-Jun-11 00:09:06

yes, you are being very unreasonable and possibly this is a wind up?

ilovesooty Thu 02-Jun-11 00:09:33

It's not as if your daughter would be aware of any gift though, is it?

Meow75 Thu 02-Jun-11 00:09:55

Why does a 9-month old care about having a gift from NY? Really?!

I'd be more annoyed about the rubbish effort - if you are going all that way and want to get a gift for someone, at least get a decent, grown-up one. Keyrings are what you buy for a teenager!!

AuntiePickleBottom Thu 02-Jun-11 00:10:35

yabu, why do you think she should of.

AgentZigzag Thu 02-Jun-11 00:12:36

It is mean spirited and I can understand why you feel a bit defensive on behalf of your DD.

What's she like with your DD normally?

bubblecoral Thu 02-Jun-11 00:13:19

YABU. Why do you think she should just because she has been to NY? We have shops in the UK too you know.

Benjamas Thu 02-Jun-11 00:14:42

Because she's her only grandchild?
Because she kept talking for weeks about how good the shopping would be for DD?
Because she totally built it up to us, saying how it would be nice for DD to have clothes not from next/mothercare etc for a change...

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe Thu 02-Jun-11 00:14:53

It sounds as if you're fuming about you, regardless of your DD who is only 9 months. I think MIL could have stretched to two keyrings; one for you, one for DH, but I can't see why you think she should have bought something for a 9 month old. What on earth for? confused

A1980 Thu 02-Jun-11 00:15:16

A 2 week stay in New York doens't come cheap and perhaps funds didn't allow the purchase of a useless nick nack for a baby who doesnt care about being bought a gift.

Benjamas Thu 02-Jun-11 00:15:39

Zigzag - she lives for her. That's why I don't get it!!

BooyHoo Thu 02-Jun-11 00:15:40

oh FGS!!

the child wont give a damn. MIL could produce wax from her ear and the child woul be happy. dont be so bloody petty. i swear people actively look for things to get annoyed about.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe Thu 02-Jun-11 00:16:20

Maybe she ran out of money, Benjamas, easily done. Don't embarrass her. Perhaps she has bought some clothes for DD but these are for Christmas or birthday?

AgentZigzag Thu 02-Jun-11 00:22:09

It is amazing how the time slips by when you're on holiday, and like Lying says, perhaps everything was more expensive than she planned for.

If she lives for your DD, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

It'd fuck me off if she was buying presents for all and sundry, stacks for other GC like, but it just sounds like she got carried away before she went, and who hasn't done that? smile

jasper Thu 02-Jun-11 00:23:41

Great myth , New York shopping , if you ask me, especially for kids ' stuff.
I went there and really struggled to find anything nice for my wee kids .

My USA realtives on the other hand cannot get over how good two things are , shopping wise in the Uk

1) Kids ' clothes
2) underwear, especially bras

Anyhoo, you should never ever expect a gift and get miffed when one is not forthcoming

jasper Thu 02-Jun-11 00:24:36

why does "she lives for her" equate to buying stuff?

SingingSands Thu 02-Jun-11 00:25:14

I bet she HAS bought lots of lovely things - and is saving them up for Christmas!

Update in December!

ilovesooty Thu 02-Jun-11 00:27:37

why does "she lives for her" equate to buying stuff?

I wondered that. How greedy and grasping can you get?

Benjamas Thu 02-Jun-11 00:28:19

I'm just so pissed off. It's like the final insult to me. She may love DD but she hates me, and now I just feel like I'm done trying and this was a massive dig.

Benjamas Thu 02-Jun-11 00:30:09

Jasper - because she told us as much?? The threads like 10 posts long, did you miss that?

7to25 Thu 02-Jun-11 00:32:56

The exchange rate is not great just now, the days of two dollars to the pound are long gone and a stay in NY does not come cheap. Do not berate her, she probably ran out of money. I am currently living in the US and long for M&S for the bras! Jasper is right!

Why don't you get on with her Benjamas?

You're just pissed off you didn't get a 'I heart NY' keyring aren't you?

Go on, admit it grin

squeakytoy Thu 02-Jun-11 00:40:32

When exactly did she get back? She may not even have finished unpacking yet...
