Iv'e got a pair of linen trousers from M&S that I've only worn about 10 times and there is a hole in them, where the linen has rubbed. M&S said it was normal wear and tear. I burst out laughing and said "what, after 10 wearings?!" Checkout woman was insistent though and so was her supervisor. I didn't want money back, just wanted a new pair in exchange. I was so angry that that they thought this sort of wear was to be expected but even more annoying that they were the only trousers that fitted me nicely in years!

HEad office will give you an exchange/refund/firstborn.

SOunds like they were pretty rude!

Well linen is very thin...and can you be sure you only wore them ten times? Could it be more?

Either way, what with rubbing (when you're waring them) and all that washing and drying, I wouldn't expect linen to stand up to much more.

How does it sound like they were rude? Confused

All the OP said about them was "Checkout woman was insistent though and so was her supervisor".......

Depending on the linen, 10 times could be enough to produce a hole... hard to gauge without seeing the trousers really.

Even so, M+S are usually really good at this sort of thing so if you're really not happy I'd speak to someone higher up.

Firstly YANBU.

Secondly, I am really surprised at their attitude, they are normally really good as I have taken things back for same reason.

Lastly, Trading Standards. They are really helpful and will definately sort it for you. If you had paid a fiver from Primarni then all well and good but M&S are surposed to pride themselves for their quality.

People would buy trousers and only expect to get 10 wears out of them Shock

worral, I misread! THought the lady on the checkout was the one who laughed.

10 wears is ridiculous though. No way should there be a hole.

They said that they could try sending them to Head Office for me but that were positive that they'd say tough luck, too. It could have been more than 10 times, worraliberty, but I'd only be out by a few - I had them for about 5 or 6 weeks and probably wore them about twice a week...?

Just realised that I shouldn't mention on MN that I wear linen trousers :o

It depends how much you paid for them I think, if they were really cheap then I would put it down to experience and not buy anything like it again.
I recently bought a thin casual shirt from M&S and again 10 wears no more anyway and holes in the front where the shirt rubbed on a bulky jeans belt of mine. I threw it away and will look for better quality next time

They were £19.50. But I don't think the money is the point really; if I'd only spent a fiver I'd still expect them to last longer!

10 wear is NOT a reasonable lifespan for clothing. No, linen won't last as long as other fabrics, but 10 wears?

HO will not agree with the shop. Don't send them off. Call HO, explain the situation.

There is nothing HO like less than a customer that the shop has not managed to placate. They don't like this stuff going to area managers, et al.

call head office - 10 wears is not acceptable

My friend once returned a pair of shoes because the stitching broke within half an hour of her putting them on and was asked in a very accusing tone "and were you wearing them outside when it happened? Because these shoes aren't made to be worn outside you know." She got her money back

Ten wears is not reasonable usage. How long have you had them? Consumer Direct are usually very helpful with issues like this.

Try a different branch first, failing that call head office or write to head office.

I took back knicker shorts I bought for DD because they were totally immodest when she sat down in them in a school skirt and even though she'd worn them they were very good about giving me refund.

I have had to throw away 2 pairs of jeans from M&S as they have gained holes. Not made like they used to be.

I bought a new toilet seat two weeks ago and the white is coming off it already. It is a soft-close one so it is impossible to close roughly and I am a slattern so it is not hard cleaning that has caused this. If the assistant says it is normal wear and tear when I try to return it I think I will literally put it round their neck and soft-close the lid on them.

Ah, I get this is my shop all the time. I advise the customer to go and eat their own shit.
