She's talking rubbish.

anonacfr Tue 31-May-11 19:05:14

Actually she's not.

You won't "get cancer" but the chemicals in the plastic become unstable over time and can leach into the water in the bottle when refilled - that's why you can buy harder plastic bottles for refilling.

There is a theory that certain plastics are bad for you and can cause cancer - it was big in the news a little while ago so I'm sure a google search would throw some stuff up.

However, I do it - my theory is that if we avoided everything they said could cause cancer we wouldn't eat/drink/leave the house/or anything else....

Total bollix. The argument that chemicals from the plastic leech into the water also works for freshly bottled water.

It was an email scam. There is no evidence for it.

My response to this kind of thing is that I have to die of something.

squeakytoy Tue 31-May-11 19:17:52

It wasnt a scam, and there is a danger in constantly reusing plastic bottles.

mnistooaddictive Tue 31-May-11 20:20:57

no evidence that water bottles are dangerous if reused

delusionsofadequacy Tue 31-May-11 21:27:56

Re-using plastic bottles without proper cleaning (particularly if using sports cap type ones) can result in a big bacteria build up - so not good for someone with a weakened immune system from chemo. Don't know enough about the plasticisers causing cancer argument though to comment on that.

BooyHoo Tue 31-May-11 21:29:26

agree redexpat.

Id be worried about drinking from aluminum bottles frequently, as there is a linkfrom aluminium cookware to alzheimers I believe.

vintageteacups Wed 01-Jun-11 00:30:17

Over time, the plastic in some bottles (PEP?) degrades and leaches I think.

That's why you shouldn't leave a bottle of water in the car and then drink it - the heat speeds up this reaction.
