Going to a wedding help needed!

AIBU to ask for help in buying a dress for this wedding.
I did put this on style but got no response.
I am going to my cousins wedding in august. It is big do, perfect etiquette, everyone has to wear a hat or fascinator, all a bit ott for me but it's not my wedding. We are a bit short on funds and my mum said she had a monsoon dress that I could have that she had never worn, now I have seen it, it looks terrible on me, which she is fine with.
I have quite a large bust with an hourglass figure, long very blond hair and 5'6", ok I am a size 16 but have recently lost almost 4st. The dress my mum gave me is halter-neck and empire line from the bust down so just not the right shape for me at all. Thing is I have already got my shoes, bag, wrap and hairpeice, all in silver-grey.
I have never been to a wedding like this so not sure what is the done thing. I have seen a few dresses on ebay that are made in china this and this are my favourite ones but just not sure if they are suitable, the first one is also in eggshell blue and deep purple.
Please help me, I know everyone else has their outfit, and spent a fair amount on.

eBay is good but choose a buyer from the UK. I brought a monsoon dress off there last year for a wedding and cost me a £10 and I got a fascinator from BHS for £8 and I will admit I looked good. Also try charity shops too had my best buys there and dress agency too.
Hope that helps xxx

LCarbury · 30/05/2011 15:37

The second isn't suitable really as it's such a bright red and such a plunging neckline. The first is OK if you go for the blue or purple but I couldn't find those colours. It's all polyester though. What's your budget? Can we have a play and help you find some more choices?

bittersweetvictory · 30/05/2011 15:42

Love the first one but like mollydolly says, try to get one from uk as china sizes seem to be very small, i ordered a size 14 dress from china for a function and it was more like a size 8, by the time i changed it it was too late so ended up with one from a charity shop which BTW is gorgous and looked like new, i think i paid about £7.00

Mollydollydoll · 30/05/2011 15:46

OP personally I dont like either as they are coming from china the sizes will be very very small. Please choose a UK seller, pick some more dresses and us ladies will help you

keepingupwiththejoneses · 30/05/2011 15:48

We don't have any dress agencies round here. I have been looking at the size 18s due to the measurements. Here is the blue and the purple.
I have about £50 for a dress, as I said I have already got accessories in silver grey so will need to match.

OP posts:
Mollydollydoll · 30/05/2011 15:52

I like them both but the light blue one is gorgeous. I'd go for that one x

troisgarcons · 30/05/2011 15:53

Don't be frightened of buying from China on eBay - check the feed back if you are unsure. The stuff is top quality at a fraction of the price.

The down side of course, is whether you are the sort to wring your hands in anguish over the morals and ethics of paying peasents peanuts. Persaonlly I'm not. They have their economy and we have ours.

I know several people who have bought custom made wedding and prom dresses from similar sources and all have been delighted with their purchases.

The sizes are not smaller...... you give them your measurements and they bespoke the dress accordingly

keepingupwiththejoneses · 30/05/2011 15:55

OK I have quite a few on my watch list, here goes;
maybe too much grey
Pink
Plum
Not sure about length
Monsoon
It doesn't have to be from ebay, just I hate shopping.

I like the "not sure about length one" lovely colour

Charity shops are brilliant - at least you can try it on. Oxfam have reworked dresses in some of their stores - originals done by art students and inexpensive.

Last year I went to 'do' and bought a stunning red lace dress from a charity shop. It still had the label on it - priced at £!99.00 - but it was only £14.99!

Ambi · 30/05/2011 16:11

I was just going to recommend that seller for occasion dresses. I went to my cousins wedding on Sat and bought my dress from there. The Ever pretty brand seems good, the quality of the dress is great and took 3 weeks to deliver on normal delivery. I paid £8.49 plus packing, (I'm so skint at the mo and begrudge paying a fortune for a dress I wear once or twice.)

keepingupwiththejoneses · 30/05/2011 16:18

ambi thanks for that, that was my main worry.
The only oxfam by me is really naff and quite expensive, might have a look on their website, if they have one!

Oxfam is expensive well the one near me is and it's too over priced.
You'll find the right one OP

QuackQuackSqueak · 30/05/2011 16:28

OP you might want to ignore izzy20112011, it's a kid on half term by the sounds of other threads they have started.

TalkinPeace2 · 30/05/2011 16:28

Go to your local charity shops (in the nearest posh town) and ask the manager what they have out the back
you'll be amazed at what does not make it onto the rails

have you been to a TK maxx?

keepingupwiththejoneses · 30/05/2011 16:37

I also like this one from the same seller.
I did wonder about izzy

Would ditto the Ebay suggestion. Also, have you looked at ASOS online - they can have good discounts on current high street stuff? Think it is //www.asos.co.uk, but if you google it you will find it. Good luck.

Mollydollydoll · 30/05/2011 16:41

I like that one OP my fave so far....

diddl · 30/05/2011 17:04

The "not sure about the length" one is stunning imo.

Also like the long purple one & the short plum one.

Yukana · 30/05/2011 17:34

Ah I love giving advice on fashion. Grin

I'd avoid buying from China. I stopped buying as soon as I realised that some of them use child labour.

If you have items in silver/grey I'd recommend using colors such as a deep purple, deep blue (royal blue/bright but darker blues are okay too!). Red definitely goes better with gold I'm afraid, and they tend not to be flattering on larger ladies. (My own experience here!) Plus, deep (deep, not too dark, obviously it's a wedding! :) ) colors will flatter your figure and your bust too. I hope this helps!

Well I have bid on both the blue and the purple. I have emailed them and they have said I can return the one I don't want so that is good. Just hope they look ok now.

I saw a lady try this on in Marks yesterday......

She had already bought the accessories and tried it on with dark grey shoes (they were all in a dune bag), clutch and fascinator and looked fab!
She was either a 16 or 18 and about my height (5'5" ish).

beesimo · 30/05/2011 18:46

Yukana

Actually I think people in the well off west should realise that the reason there is child labour in overseas garment factories ect is that the familes can't survive without the money their bairns earn. Often it is the difference between food and shelter for the family and abject poverty under the stars.

Do you not think they love their children as much as you love yours?

Unless you are going to send them money anyway stop being so pompous and let them work/trade their way out of misery and want.
