noticed it yest and called them to find out what on earth is going on.

Seemingly it's def mine, I had not told them I was on mat leave so they were still paying me tax credits on the basis of what I was supposed to be earning. When they got my p60 total it was far less than my wage as they don't take maternity allowance into account when working tax credits out.

I'm still shaking and never slept last night.

I am due my mum £1000 which she has been waiting patiently on and I can't wait to see her face when I give her it today as I know she has just had a large bill.

It's so tempting to blow the rest on the dd's and really spoil them as things have been tight lately but I think I will transfer it over to the building society and keep about £50 for a family day out.

Can't believe I was so close to not claiming this year as we were only getting a few pound a week.

Checked my bank again this morning to make sure I was not dreaming.

Similar has happened to me when I had overestimated my earnings and it's a great feeling. You sound really sensible in how you spend it compared to me though =)

Lucky you! We have just lost all of our tax credits due to earning 'too much', and they've added a £300 over payment on top. I swear they make it up as they go along!!

Thats what I was worried about ever happening cupoftea, that's why I thought I would quit claiming before I ever did owe them anything but as things were tight I thought a few pounds may still help every week. Not had my new awards notice yet so don't know what my weekly payments will be.

Never thought to ask when I was on the phone. Was to shocked.

Ah that's brilliant! We've had a couple of similar things - when DS was over a year old the council realised they had no record of him being a dependant (wtf?!) - they owed us nearly £2k.

Also DH has been off for months (prolapsed disc... He's now lost his job because of it) - his normal wages are under £18k but he gave them his P60 which showed it was under 13. So he got about 800 quid. Which will tide us over till I start my job next month :)

Similar to you OP, my parents have been amazing at not asking for some money back - they paid one months rent when DH's sick pay stopped without warning - but it looks like we can afford to pay them back soon. Waiting to see if I'm owed any family tax credit too, I'm not sure how it all works though.

Its lovely when that happens, I got a council tax rebate of £530 recently. Its like winning the lottery but with your own money!
