AIBU?

in thinking a chipped Golf DTI will not be more economical than a normal car?

DH desparately needs a new car, of this there is no doubt. His is very old and has well over a hundred thousand on the clock. It has no power left and can hardly overtake a tractor. He drives about 1/2 hr to work and back each day.
I'm now a SAHM as our 2 youngest are not at school and DD3 has reflux and food problems so money is fairly important.
DH and DBIL (a mechanic, but a petrol head also) are trying to convince me that a Golf DTI with a performance chip will be more economical (than without the chip.) But is it going to be as fuel economical as a normal (ie, not boy racer) diesel car. BTW I think DH is having a semi midlife crisis so go easy on him. I just need facts and figures to argue the case with this pair of aging petrolheads!Grin

Not entirely sure what you mean by a performance chip but this seems to show good fuel economy for lots of the TDI models.

I've got an Audi A4 TDI which delivers good economy and is also in a ridiculously low VED category. I think Audi/VW have worked hard to deliver low VED categories as well recently so factor that in too...

Thanks, facts and figures will help. Performance chip apparently gives more power when needed to accelerate/overtake etc, but is supposed to not cost any more in fuel etc. Above my head, but slightly worried that DH is just wanting to relive his boyracer years, and not truly thinking about fuel economy as a father of 5.Hmm

Have you checked the insurance for a Golf TDI? You might be unpleasantly surprised this year :(

No idea on the diesel but dh has a golf r and it is not particularly economical IMO. Nice to drive and definitely powerful, but economical no!
