AIBU?

AIBU to think Adelle is greedy, ignorant and ungrateful?

Surely most people would just be pleased that they'd earned £8 million, and grateful to the general public for spending so much money on her music?

Also, while she clearly doesn't realise trains have been privatised, she presumably never plans to use a road or pavement again - as clearly her tax bill couldn't go towards paying for them? Likewise I imagine she never plans to avail herself of the police, fire or ambulance services? Nor of course is she benefiting financially from the various free-trade agreements (worked out at the taxpayers' expense) that allow her to sell her music overseas and thus get such a whopping tax bill? She make think state schools are shit, but she went to one - who does she think paid for it?

Why is it the more money people seem to earn the stingier they get?

I cant stand the woman. I like a few of her songs, but even they are getting a bit monotonous now and her new album is rather boring.

She also has a huge attitude problem too, and I read an interview she had done for another newspaper this week, and in almost every sentence there was an expletive. Someone should tell her that being foul mouthed is neither big or clever

Yes, most of us swear, but surely if you are being interviewed by a national newspaper you can hold it in for a while and show some decorum.

I dont know why so many singers cant just get on with singing rather than trying to be political when they are clearly fairly clueless about what they are saying too.

ick.

I bet her diamond shoes are too tight and all. Shut up Adele (I mean that, I really, really do...just please...stop all of it, the talking AND the weird howly-oh-god-this-note-is-going-on-forever-this-is-uncomfortable-please-stop "singing")

cheers

YANBU. I am a higher rate tax payer and I do not begrudge one penny. I have also worked for less than minimum wage, and I see it as contributing to those less fortunate - and the costs of NHS and the public services that I use. I believe passionately in our welfare state system.

I wouldn't have thought this possibly but I like her even less now.

That is some accomplishment.

She's able to use the trains all she likes....
And the NHS
And any other public service.

I honestly would not recognise her in the street..
Especially without make up.

But then i probably wouldn't recognise David Bowie in Ziggy war paint either.

we all moan about paying our taxes i use to look at my pay slip and wince, seeing 4 million pound go out of your account is a big blow i would imagine and it all relative really, you live within your means. there is nothing wrong with having a moan about it, she was probably unwise to do it to a news paper that would obviously print it and probably take it out of context and make you sound like a twat but hey so what her prerogative. its not really greedy, i dont think to miss the money that you make and kind of wish you didnt have to give it to the government.

It is cringeworthy.
But tbh I think it has more to do with being young and self absorbed and not that bright than being malicious.

I bet that in a fairly short time she will be, quite rightly, embarrassed.

YY to the Shut Up Adele campaign. Stop your wailing. It sounds painful.
I am baffled as to why we care what slebs think about anything other than their particular area of expertise. I couldn't give a weasel's chuff what Jordan thinks about capital punishment or soap stars think about education or what Adele thinks of taxation systems.
Still, maybe she'll push off to live with Phil Collins, Mr Topshop and Lewis Hamilton. That'd be a bonus particularly if a freak tornado hit that tax haven.

YANBU

I've got nothing against Adele as an artist, although she's not one of my particular favourites.

But I agree, this whining about her tax bill does rather stick in the craw, given that she will not only have made at least 4 million quid out of her latest revenue sweep, but those songs will continue to bring her a handsome income for many years to come, even after she's stopped performing them.

Begrudging some of it so others may benefit seems rather ungrateful, to say the least.

She's hardly being left a pauper once her tax bill has been paid now, is she?

I suppose we can only hope she doesnt have another failed relationship, then she will run out of material, and we wont have "23".

CowWatcher · 26/05/2011 11:14

Clearly, what she said was ignorant and rather offensive to the rest of us normal people who pay our taxes and use public services. Hwever, before bitching too strongly, let's remember that she's only 23. I know I said many stupid and offensive things when I was 23. I hadn't had the benefit of a mumsnet education back then. Wink

"we all moan about paying our taxes"

I don't!

Report
TechLovingDad · 26/05/2011 11:16

I moan about my tax, like everyone else but I then look at the amount left and think "well, everything's paid for".

£4million quid AFTER tax? Fuck me, I'd be on cloud nine. She'd do well to remember how much she had after tax before she became famous.

I came on to say what pagwatch said - she's young and niave (sp?) and a little up her own arse. Annoying isn't it?

InmaculadaConcepcion · 26/05/2011 11:18

I would have been incredibly chuffed to make more than 4 million quid after tax in one year when I was 23!

WowOoo · 26/05/2011 11:18

I agree with others who've said it's her age.

We live and learn. God, I thought I knew it all then.

Paying that much tax must have been a shock. I still like her.

fair enough shirley, i was obviously making a sweeping generalisation, but i know that i did. i didnt begrudge it most of what it went towards, but it did hurt was my point.

who is adele?

I think it's been taken a little out of context. She was talking about her reaction to her first big tax bill. I reckon it probably came as a bit of a shock when you haven't been used to having loads and then you suddenly have a bill for £4million. Yes, she's a bit naive to put it in the public domain though.
