Thunder is God moving his furniture....

or so DD was told by her Headteacher today. DD has spent the remainder of the day trying to hear God! (she is nearly 5yo btw).

I am a complete atheist, but don't particularly get too cross about the religious indoctrination education that takes place at DDs school (it is not a church school). Am fine to a certain extent with them knowing the Xmas story, them hearing about Easter etc etc.

However, AIBU to think that they should have told them what thunder ACTUALLY is. What's next creationism????

Of course let her know the truth. Tell her that Father Christmas is not real and the tooth fairy isn't real either!

Seriously, go take a chill pill.

I always thought this when I was little, I dont think its a bad thing and I dont think she thought it would offend you.

I think that is quite funny grin - but yes, the teacher should have explained what thunder really is. Maybe she doesn't know? I don't either (but clearly ought to - <ignorant>...)

I was always told this, I think I knew what it really was too. Sure she wasn't just being light hearted?

maybe the teacher was just trying to sooth some scared young kids and told them this.

RhinestoneCowgirl Mon 09-May-11 18:56:21

But thunder is giants playing skittles up there isn't it? confused

smokinaces Mon 09-May-11 18:57:57

ha ha, we always said it was God playing ten-pin bowling!

SardineQueen Mon 09-May-11 19:09:54

YANBU I can't see a reason for lying about what thunder is? What it actually is is very interesting and not at all scary. This child is 5 and showing an interest, why not introduce them to some of the wonder of the natural world?

SardineQueen Mon 09-May-11 19:10:57

I mean I can understand saying that the ice-cream van plays a tune when it's run out grin, and of course father christmas and the tooth fairy go without saying! But with this, what's wrong with the truth?

Melly19MummyToBe Mon 09-May-11 19:12:13

My sister used to tell me that thunder was rain clouds bumping into each other grin

I believed this until I started secondary school and did proper geography grin

HazedandConfused Mon 09-May-11 19:14:14

You are all wrong. It is the sky hitting against the ground. So DS told me this afternoon. (Not sure why we aren't all squashed...)

sickoftheholidays Mon 09-May-11 19:15:29

I had this same conversation with DS (6) earlier. We watched the lightening, and I explained about static, air displacement, and the speed of light being greater than the speed of sound etc etc which is why the thunder is seconds after the lightening, and the longer the time between thunder and lightening, the further away it is etc.
I watched for a couple of seconds while he looked at me blankly, then I told him that actually it was God flushing the toilet, which he found hilariously funny and went to tell all his friends. I'll try again in a couple of years.

Viagrafalls Mon 09-May-11 19:15:46

Actually its clouds crashing together.

SardineQueen Mon 09-May-11 19:15:50

Now that is scary, hazed grin

sickoftheholidays Mon 09-May-11 19:18:01

Yanbu btw, I would expect more of a teacher, but I'm only a mum so am allowed to spout whatever bollox I like.

peppapighastakenovermylife Mon 09-May-11 19:18:15

No, no - It is the Gods (plural) arguing don't you know.

Or so someone announced in a work meeting today hmm grin

bigbumum Mon 09-May-11 19:19:25

NO! Its the clouds crashing together...everybody knows that!

ebbandflow Mon 09-May-11 19:21:01

My dd 6 (Catholic School) reckons she can see god outside when it is thundering. She has also updated the story to it being god fixing his computer.

prettyfly1 Mon 09-May-11 19:21:14

Oh for god sake - yip lets never tell kids fairy stories - tell em the truth all the time. They dont need a childhood anyway.

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky Mon 09-May-11 19:22:16

It's just a joke fgs hmm

LoveLeonardCohen Mon 09-May-11 19:22:36

Choufleur Mon 09-May-11 19:23:17
