to drive through my own village?

I am puzzled.

A couple of months ago we moved to a small village outside Bath. It is a tiny little place with a single track road going in and out. It is about half a mile to the main road on the outskirts of Bath in one direction and about 2 miles or so to the other main road.

There is almost no traffic which is very nice after London...except between 7.30 and 9 in the morning when it turns into the M1. Everyone who lives to the south of the city and doesn't want to queue on the main road cuts down the little roads and through the village. The village council did a census and there was something ridiculous like 300 cars in the space of half an hour - ridiculous bearing in mind more than one car an hour is a major event for the rest of the day.

I have no issue with this - I would probably do it myself so this isn't a case of me standing on the edge of the village with a pitchfork shouting "Getorf my laaaand!" I go out in the opposite direction at 7.45 to take DS to nursery in the next village two days a week. It takes about 15 minutes to go 2 miles because I am going against the flow of traffic which means I am the one who has to squeeze into the hedge or siderows. I stopped over 20 times this morning.

What I do have a massive problem with is the attitude of a large number of the school run mums. It is presumably obvious to them that the very few people who are going the opposite way must live locally as no-one in their right mind would try to use it as a cut-through going that way. Every day, at least two of these women shake their heads at me as I sit in the hedge waiting for them to pass, as though I am being terribly unreasonable and inconveniencing them by leaving my house. This morning it was three.

The other day a mum refused to reverse into a passing space about 3 feet behind her even tthough the car behind reversed to give her room, so I finished up having to actually get off the road and into a shallow ditch, whereupon she shouted at me and waved her arms about.

This morning I had more mouthing and arm waving from someone who I was letting past.

Am I missing something here? Is it unreasonable of me to actually leave my house on a necessary journey while these women wish to use the road?

And before I get jumped on for generalising, it is not all of the women, and yes, it is absolutely limited to women with school-age children in the car. The bulk of the rest of the traffic is made up of local business guys in vans and they are always polite and thank me, or look apologetic.

I am seriously considering adopting an "I'm not moving" police tomorrow. I might take a book to read and get it out during a who has to reverse stand-off. Or I might wind my window down and tell everyone I pass that the road is closed and I have had to turn round and come back.

Grr!

Policy. Not police.
Although I might also form the "I'm not moving police".

Hello - I must live fairly near to you - well at least rurally outside of Bath and our house is on a single lane.

If I were you I would simply refuse to reverse - you've got more time than them if they're doing a school-run.

I've had it where some-one is literally 2 metres away from a pulling over point and they won't reverse as don't want to get their car muddy/or can't reverse where as I'd have to reverse for 0.5 miles. So now I just sit there and wait. Tis quite fun Smile

And people shouldn't drive down single track lanes if they don't/won't reverse.

That sounds hideous and would really piss me off. Not sure what the solution is though.

Although my personal bug-bear are the lazy dog walkers who don't get out and walk their dogs they just drive slowly along our lane with the dogs running alongside their cars.

Then they have to huff and puff getting dogs in the car before they can even contemplate reversing or letting me by.

Maybe we could meet in a layby somewhere and ambush other drivers.

I am glad it isn't just me. Not being from the west country I was actually starting to wonder if it is like parts of Eastern Europe where shaking your head actually means something entirely different and what they were actually saying was "Thank you so much, you are very kind".

Ooh Tracey that's hardcore! I have to do the pulling over thing several times a day as my school runs are down narrow lanes, but it's a relatively short journey so never usually more than two or three times.

Luckily most people seem to be reasonable round here! (Stroud)

People walk dogs through their car window?! Seriously?!

No solution Whatswrongwithyou - I will just have to work on my zen reversing.....

You moved from London hey?

Just every day picture the Northern Line, in all of its delayed, miserable, smelly, overcrowded glory. Picture yourself waiting for train after train to come that is sufficiently uncrowded that you can squeeze onto it, with your nose in some guy's armpit .. and then the mysterious stuck in a tunnel thing... where you think you are going to faint. etc. etc. Your journey sounds like a waft of calming loveliness compared to that.

Anway, they are probably shit drivers who have spent all morning yelling at their kids and are totally frazzled and not very good at reversing. Smile and wave!

Can't meet in a layby near me - our nearest ones seem to be in constant use by people having affairs.

Yes Mr Silver van - I can see that woman's head going down on you at 3pm every thursday afternoon as can my small children Hmm

But people who can't reverse shouldn't drive down narrow lanes - tis madness.

Gosh can you tell this is a bugbear of mine Blush

domesticslattern - no picturing needed - I still work in London three days a week, although I have the joys of the Victoria line.

[muses over where this dirty layby is]

Actually an old boyfriend always used to smile and wave at people who were aggressive drivers as he reasoned it freaked them out as they thought he was a friend Smile

There's a woman in our village who loves on a narrow lane and famously refuses to reverse.
She once gave me the finger.

Are you totally sure that you are not gong the wrong way down a one-way street? Grin

TandB · 17/02/2011 21:06

Ooh lots of local people. Maybe we could have a MN rally and drive slowly around the country lanes not reversing.

And maybe shouting at Mr Silver van and his shameless hussy.

[ponders Wallace's suggestion]

Pretty sure! It would be a long one-way street and the one tiny local bus would be going the wrong way too.

Am quite tempted to write down his registration number and call the police - non-emergency number obviously Smile

We also get the hunt round here every other Wednesday but I don't mind stopping for them [Jilly Cooper reverie]

have complete sympathy for you; i live in a village in central england. We have our first 'rush hour' at 5am (lorries and london commuters i guess) and then a second one from 7am to 8.30am, final one at 4.30 to 6pm. I get beeped at and shouted at for reversing into my drive or pulling out of it during those times; one day i was forced to reverse out of the drive as no one would stop to let me get over to reverse in the night before - so a man got out of his car and shouted at me for reversing out (its a high visibility road so no danger just slowed the traffic down for a few minutes). i was completely amazed!

sounds much like my village which is also a rat run between 7-9. People get SO irate and stupid about not pulling in or reversing. there are cars parked all down one side (inc. ours) outside houses so the through traffic has to pull into gaps to get past and there are frequent nose to nose confrontations. When I take DS to his CM and then go to work, it can take 15 mins to get from one end to he other, not so much because of the volume of traffic but because people don't give way.

Oh reversing out of the drive - that is also a cardinal sin. I did that this morning which caused someone to have to stop for all of 3 seconds. This resulted in much glaring and revving.

tracybath - there is a hunt and a man being serviced nearby. Are you sure it isn't Rupert Campbell-Black?
