Only popped in because it's DS's birthday next week and someone told me they sell big bags of balloons in there.

Get a pack, and approach the till area with DD (who is 7). On the till end, in clear view to everyone queing, is a display of Condoms and pink vibrating 'love-rings' - cock rings I suppose they would be better known as.

The pinkness of the boxes they are in and the word 'ring' catches DDs attention and she wants to know what they are for. There was definite sniggering from the couple behind us as I struggled to find the right words. I told her they were for grown ups to wear, which wasn't a lie, but she kept pressing me on it and I had to tell her to be quiet in the end.

DD is totally clueless about sex, but even if she weren't, I still don't think I'd like to have to explain what they are for.

I am no prude - but am I right to be angry about the fact that Poundland display them in such a prominent position, exactly where the sweets would normally be? It's wrong on so many levels IMO. I will be writing to them tomorrow.

What a bargin! Which poundland was it and did you notice if batteries were included?

ha ha haaaaaa @catsmamma...

you really felt phyiscally sick?

agree a box of cock rings by the till is not a great place, simply leaving it as 'it's something for grown ups' and then distracting her is enough surely....

Oh dear. Awkward! I don't think YABU. They could have put the display somewhere more thoughtful and higher up.

But then, it is Poundland - hardly known for being classy!

I complained to Poundland recently. I took my son shopping on NYE. The P shop was supposed to shut at 4pm. The manager locked the door at 3.50pm!! I was furious!

Agree that they should'nt have been beside the tills. YANBU though I know I wouldn't bother writing a letter of complaint about it.

you felt "physically sick"...

oh dear ...

is it really difficult to say to your child "balloons for grown ups darling, now, put your own balloons in your bag and lets go"

right, must get to the shops before they close...

Wink

Yes, I felt physically sick wondering what I could tell her. You know that funny lurch your stomach does when you are scared etc, well that happened.

I shouldn't have to be explaining or lying to a 7 year old, that's my point. In Boots or Superdrug, they sell these things but you don't go down that aisle with your kids if you don't want to have to explain do you?

I apologies for all the typos in the title too.

I would have raised an eyebrow but also felt slightly amused, I think. Feeling physically sick sounds a bit overdramatic and suggests you might be more prudish than you think, maybe? You should probably start talking to your daughter about sex quite soon too. Why don't you read Mummy Laid an Egg together?

dont be so ridiculous.. thats part of having kids.. making up something to shut them up.. and stop them asking embarassing questions...

TBH I have never avoided an area of boots/super-drug in case my extremely nosy and precocious 7 & 8yr olds ask me a question...Grin

I just don't see the funny side I'm afraid. I still protest that I'm not being prudish, I just think it's the wrong place to be displaying these items.

If you felt physically sick at the sight of cock rings and condoms, at the counter or not, then you really do need to talk to someone.

It's no different than the dispensers in the toilets.

Either a) just tell her
b) make something up
c) tell her you will tell her when you leave the shop.

Condoms I would explain they are to stop grown ups making babies when they aren't ready for them.

Cock rings - I would tell her that they are toys for grown ups, not little girls.

No big deal.

I have used them with my DH before, so I am not physically sick at the sight of them! That's been taken totally out of context Chipping, a bit unfair of you truthfully.

You are over reacting - just explain it's cheap rubbish like the rest of the stock.

One of my finest moments was in Camille ...posh(well posh-ish) nightie/undies store when dd spotted a French maids outfit at the till and of course wanted to know what that particular outfit was for.

"Well darling she doesn't want to get her new best nightie all dirty when she is dusting does she?"
