I texted my boss this afternoon to give her a heads up that I will be calling in sick tomorrow as I have been diagnosed with gastroenteritis this morning. Explosive shits, projectile vomit and now dry heaving, the lot.

Four hours later I get a reply saying basically she wants me in as she is sick and she wants to go home when I get in! Bear in mind she had a lot of random sick hours off over Xmas and the fact that I covered her last week even though I'd started feeling ropey by then. I sent her a reply saying that unless the diarrhea stopped, I wouldn't be going out anywhere. She relied then saying she will need a doc's note?! WTF?! Oh and she threatened me with a phonecall to my area manager ( common practice for her when she can't get her own way) I am so annoyed. On top of feeling like death I am now feeling shit about work.

Hey, pay for a private certificate for a few days if necessary, bearing in mind you don't get paid for the first three days of sickness.

She's an idiot! Surely as your boss, its up to her to arrange cover in your (totally justified) absence? And she's talking rubbish about the Dr's note; you have to self-certify for your first 7 days absence. Poor you; you don't need this when you're ill.

You are able to self certify for a week without a doctors note. Unless you have been off sick a lot and are on a warning for this you do not need a doctors note.

I would keep the texts and tell her she is welcome to contact the area manager and you will have the texts from her as proof of her harassment when you have informed her you are ill.

I would also remind her that you are doing the responsible thing staying off work rather than passing this around to all the other staff (and depending on your job customers / clients) and that with this in mind you will be following guidelines and staying off for 48 hours after the last loose motion / vomit.

Call in the morning and refuse to go in because apart from anything else, if you do and the rest of the office (and hopefully her!) go down with it, she will first in line to blame you!

Do you get paid if you are off sick? I know some places don't pay. If so, I'd stick to my guns and tell her to go ahead, phone the area manager and get them to phone you so you can explain your illness (in great detail if they wish). If you don't get paid then it's really up to you - but there is no way on this earth that I would thank you for turning up to work with D&V. I work for the NHS (non-frontline) and we're not supposed to return until about 48 hours after the last bout.

Do NOT give in to your boss, and do NOT stress about it. You are ill with a contagious condition - I'm amazed that she would even think of telling you to come in given that.

Get to bed, dose yourself with kaolin or whatever and hope you feel better soon . It might also be an idea to check your HR policy on D&V when you return - and have a word with your AM about the position your arse of a boss put you in.

alicet pay for the first three days of any sickness is entirely up to the employer - statutory sick pay doesn't kick in until the fourth day so unless bupcakes' employer offers more generous sick pay than they are required to, she won't be paid for the first three days.
