AIBU?

To think this is weird clothing?

Have posted about BIL and his GF before and their very PDA.

We are at ILs for our traditional family NYD lunch, it's something we all look forward to and make abut of an effort for, lovely food, wine, get dressed up etc.

Everyone looks lovely, DD is having a whale of a time and then BIL's GF comes downstairs. BIL is in smart trousers, shirt etc and she is wearing pink PJ bottoms, a basque 3 sizes too small and a tatty black Cardigan.

DH joking said "had she just got out of bed?" and she replied "no I've been getting ready upstairs" apparently this is what she is wearing today.

AIBU to think that is just odd? She knows what we do on this day as MIL and me were talking about it on Christmas Eve with her and saying what we were wearing etc.

Is she called Vicky Pollard?.....

She's probably making a point. I wouldnt like to feel pressured to dress up and plan it a week beforehand what I was wearing to a family lunch

yes, clearly everyone should have the same taste/style as you. the cowbag! how dare she wear what she thinks looks nice

god, it's almost as bad as when you have guests over and they spend their time posting on the internet slagging off other family members. I hate that too

The fact is she can wear whatever she likes, think you are going to have fun with this new member of the family!

YABU ..she can wear what she likes

YANBU> Yes, she is entitled to wear what she likes but to wear pjs and a basque just shows a lack of respect to your PIL tbh. Does she have any idea of the amount of prep they will have done and how much effort they have put in? By dressing in that manner she's kind of saying she doesn't care imo, which in someone else's house is just rude

I thank god every day I didn't marry a man with a family that sounds just like yours, I'd have spent my life disappointing him/them and probably had a nervous break down. It's better the girl hears the rude comments now so she knows what she's getting into.

Xmas Shock - shit maybe that was me SE....

oh no - I only went to the corner shop in my PJ's with a jacket thrown over the top Xmas Blush (in my defense my PJ bottoms are leggings and until I actually told the DS's I hadn't got dressed yesterday they thought I was in my day clothes Xmas Grin)

If your husband said "has she just got out of bed?" close enough for her to hear then he is a v rude man. Talking about heras if she isn't there.

Next year why not buy her a skirt and a sparkly top from next for Christmas? She'll be really pleased to have something appropriate to wear and will think warmly of you for helping her through this tricky social situation. Problem solved!

Happy to help :)

oh come on - it was a planned thing where they dress up a bit. She knew about it. Surely a pair of (no holey) jeans and a vaguely smart top would have been a better effort?

If she did't want to dress up a little surely it would have been at least polite to say "actually I'd rather not get dressed up"

Bet she wouldn't wear that out to a party or a meal out........

Whatever happened to a bit of manners and occasionally accommodating other people and what they want?

if there was a dress code then maybe they should have told her.

how do you know they are pyjama trousers?
maybe this IS what she thinks is dressing up nicely?

my point is that just because you don't like it and it isn't "classy" doesn't mean she hasn't made an effort to look nice does it?

if you judge people on what they wear then you're just shallow anyway.

Oh come on she sounds like a right laugh.

Now I'm never normally rude but I would've cracked up laughing if I was there.

I also agree with baroqin

oh don't get me wrong, i do agree that what she is wearing sounds very odd!

but just cos it's weird doesn't mean she hasn't made an effort, or doesn't think that she looks lovely. does it?

and the OP is being incredibly rude and unkind by spending time at this "do" posting nasty messages about her SIL on the internet!

Report
DurhamDurham · 01/01/2011 13:28

Oh I agree that the gf was rude to slob around in pj's and a too-small basque. But op's hubby was even ruder to speak about her as if she wasn't there in such a sneering way.

She prob did it to piss you all off....and it worked. She's prob told all her mates on FB.

FunnyLittleFrog · 01/01/2011 13:29

Yes, it's far worse to post about your SIL on the internet than to wear something a little bit odd to a family meal.

Come on, variety is the spice of life. She just sounds a tad eccentric.
