Was red hot on the phone-ins this morning they did a bit of blacking up....did you find it funny or offensive? I thoughtLittle Britain went OTT at times

They are both white. Should they only be allowed to portray white characters? They are also men and dressed up as women. One of the characters was black and a woman. They should be hung, drawn and quartered.

I found it funny.

GabbyLoggon · 28/12/2010 14:47

Mort I do see what you are getting at; and you put it very well

OP posts:
backwardpossom · 28/12/2010 14:48

The only thing offensive about it was that it was billed as 'comedy'.

Greythorne · 28/12/2010 14:51

Backwardpossum is right
it was not funny at all
but it was not offensive
lawd knows what it was doing on prime time Xmas day

the motorised trolley driver with beard was a rip off -of-- homage to Ali G

reinitindear · 28/12/2010 15:26

I think Morticia has it right although when I did watch it my first thought was how many people will complain about the "blacking up".I bet the majority of people who moaned are not black themselves. There seems to be a culture of becoming offended on behalf of other people at the moment. I myself found it funny Xmas Grin

JoBettany · 28/12/2010 15:28

I certainly didn't find it funny at all.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2010 15:29

"did a bit of blacking up"
Shock
didn't see it
Can someone explain exactly what they did?

reinitindear · 28/12/2010 15:32

Some of the sketches featured black characters played by Lucas and Walliams it wasn't the Minstrels or anything.

4andnotout · 28/12/2010 15:34

I echo everything morticia said, I found it funny and not slightly offensive.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2010 15:39

hmm

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2010 15:39

Just the characters were black?
Or were they spoof, stereotypical portrayals?

MrsMooo · 28/12/2010 15:43

I have to say I did find offensive, the Precious character in particular.
It wasn't funny in the slightest, and whilst I don't expect them to play only white characters I don't think being famous gives them the right to pander to racial stereotypes and call it humour

reinitindear · 28/12/2010 15:43

Well they were spoof stereotypical portrayals of the people previously seen on Airline and such programmes.

Rindercella · 28/12/2010 15:46

I found the two Japense girls more offensive actually. Massive stereotypes and made me feel really uncomfortable. Wasn't keen on the 'Precious' character either.

SpringHeeledJack · 28/12/2010 15:46

it was bobbins

Peter Kay did much the same thing about a decade ago, taking the piss out of the then newish fly on the wall docs

did I say the same thing?- opps, sorry. PK's was funny, clever and really well observed. Like Alan Bennett. Only funny Wink

...Lucas and Walliams's was horseshit

FAOnTelly · 28/12/2010 15:47

Didn't watch it. I find them not only NOT FUNNY but repulsive. The pair of them. Just gross human beings.

PhishFoodAddiction · 28/12/2010 16:51

Oh it was a pile of crap! Wished I hadn't bothered watching it. It wasn't even funny.

The Japanese girls bit made me cringe, didn't like the Precious sketch either. Using racial stereotypes but not in a way to challenge them. Just rubbish.

TheCrackFox · 28/12/2010 17:05

They aren't funny anymore.

TheFeministParent · 28/12/2010 17:13

I can't abide DW at all in anything. Neither are funny.

pigletmania · 28/12/2010 18:21

Noway was it offensive at all, it was really funny! Now Frankie Boyle, that was offensive. So they should only play white characters then! Its only offensive to those who choose to find offense in everything. I bet you that its white people mostly complaining. Matt and David were not making fun of different races, they were not being nasty or putting them down, but simply playing a part. They are actors, they are white, so need to get into role, that means making their skins darker, wouldent it be funny if they did not and were playing those characters, would not look right would it!

What about the gay characters they portray, are they homophobic aswell Hmm. They play plenty of white people, it would be racist if they only played white Characters. I am Armenian, and would have loved it if they played an Armenian character, i expect that i would have found it really funny.

pigletmania · 28/12/2010 18:25

They could have played a nice big Armenian mother in law, would have been funny. How about My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Borat, isent that pandering to racial sterotypesHmm. Nobody complaines because the characters are white! What about Vicky Pollard, isent that a stereotypeHmm

WinkyWinkola · 28/12/2010 18:37

Never found these two funny at all.

Lame really. Little Britain was really lame. Peter Kay so much better.

I have NEVER like them, I remember back in the 80's/ 90's they used to do a sketch before Frasier on the Paramount and didn't find them remotely funny. I was surprised when they became famous and thought little Britain was terrible...however, I did find the program at Christmas funny but I think that's because I used to watch airline. If you've never watched airline then it would seem very unfunny.

pigletmania · 28/12/2010 18:46

I agree with your scoobytoo, I used to watch Airline and therefore got some of the jokes, but if you havent then it would not be very funny.

pigletmania · 28/12/2010 18:47

I am not keen on them at all, but noway were they racist.
