ok, I get being sensible and needing to attempt to get to work/ wherever. BUT, last time we had snow, and now today, about four people have driven their cars round to the front of the close (we live in a t shaped road; two dead ends; five houses (incl. ours) come off the main road before our close splits and heads down the hill the estate is built on.)
This means that when the snow turns to ice, I have to come off my driveway, and turn sharply to avoid the cars left on the road in front of my house. People turning in to the road have to drive on the wrong side of the road, and it just makes life really hard for the four of us, when, really, its quite selfish. Plus, the cars are left so close to the corner of the junction it's dangerous generally.
If an ambulance or emergency services (has happened before) needed to turn in, these people have made it slightly trickier.
Prepared to be flamed by all of you who have just driven to the front of your roads and left your cars!

Could you put up a sign asking people not to park in certain places? Or ask Council to paint some yellow lines on the road in future?

That is a brilliant idea - I tried to ring the council after watching some bloke carefully park across the corner, as there was no space left. I've a bit scared about approaching people tho.

yanbu. It annoys me when people park on a main road instead of shovelling their own drives and bits of roads.

You should inform your local authority of the police if it gets really difficult for you to get out. They are able to remove or fine vehicles which have been irresponsibly parked in snowy weather.

I tried the council but they were closed! It's not just me; my elderly neighbours got blocked in last time. It just seems so selfish, for very little result.

I think it's OP's neighbours who parked the cars there, so they would normally notice and know about any yellow lines, couldn't easily plead ignorance.

I know that hairy- it's the selfish parking crammed along the road, and round the corner to allow them to be nearer the main roads when it ices over. A lot of things are legal; doesn't make them pleasant.

It's not legal to park within a certain distance of a junction. Can't remember how far though.

Get a massive sheet of paper, write 'selfish arse' on it and stick it on their windscreens with pva glue.

Sorry I was just trying to make the point that unless it is contravening parking laws (ie: ample space to a junction etc) then there's nothing anyone can do. so a bit pointless getting wound up about it.

I'm getting a bit with people saying 'am I being unreasonable' and then arguing when they are told if someone thinks they are/aren't!

Unfortunately it's something people just have to get used to.

I had a very very rude note left on my windscreen when I first moved here "please park YOUR car outside YOUR house, not outside MY house". There are no parking restrictions and I was not blocking anyone in/out.

I suppose this is why I find it a bit off that people complain about things like this.

If they are parking on a corner or opposite a junction then they are contravening road laws. No YADNBU. We have people on our estate who park opposite the junction on a t junction, just because it's not a main road doesn't mean it's not dangerous.

I am a Police Officer, I had to be in work at 6am today.
Snow was forecast last night, so to make sure I could get to work I parked outside someone else's house.

YABU, unless they are actually blocking you in or blocking emergency vehicles then they are doing the right thing by ensuring they are able to get their cars out to get to work tomorrow.

yabu If they are preparing in advance for snow ice in the road, you could do the same put your car out on the road ready to leave if that makes things easier.

We have the same happen in the estate across the road from us, and I completely understand the need, the road (on a steep slope) was totally inpassable this morning not gritted, no grit bins to DIY and in south devon we so rarely see the white stuff we are not prepared by having our own.

I think that there are two sides to this. Yes, some people do park irresponsibly (and as others have said it is worse in snowy weather)

However, I do an "essential" job - community nurse. I admit that I have parked on a nearby road, outside someone else's house. I had to get out of my own road at temps of -10 in the night a week ago and it was not pleasant or safe.

I would add that I have never blocked a driveway or parked near a corner/junction. (despite being blocked in on my own driveway many times)

ok, i accept maybe i am being slightly unreasonable over some of the parking. The others parked in the bus stop and on the corners (and very close to driveways) I still feel fed up about. So, maybe IADB(a bit)U?

There is something you can do.

During the recent bad snow, our council stated on their website and in the local rag that they were working with police to identify selfish buggers who parked on the main roads making everything far more dangerous for cars and buses to pass. These cars were being removed or the owners faced a fine.

Usual parking should not - and seemingly does not - apply during severe weather.

We need to change our mindset. If the snow is bad, we all need to shovel whenever we can to keep drives and side streets as clear as we possibly can.

All these parked cars mean that the snow ploughs and gritters can never properly clear the roads so the traffic remains jammed for a far longer period of time.

Shovelling I do - last time round I did my drive and bit of road, as did the three other houses in our bit. I tried the council and police yesterday, but no reply.

I get that people want to get out; it just really makes it dangerous when the main road is lined both sides with cars, and our bit is rammed with cars.

Oh course people are going to park on main roads in bad weather conditons - it's the only way you can get to work.
