AIBU?

To bash a car with a shopping trolly?

I've just got back from my mini panic buy where I didn't really get much. Quite a lot of stuff had either sold out or not reached the supermarket.
As I was pushing my trolly to our car, a car started reversing out. It was headed back at me and I had the trolly with the wonky wheel so couldn't move very quickly.
Reflexively I swung the trolly back at the car and the man driver got out and started yelling at me in Dutch (we are in Belgium). I said I was sorry but didn't speak the lingo. His harridan wife got out and went banana's in english at me. She demanded 600 euros or she'd go to the police. I said she wouldn't get anything from me as there was no damage to the car (we both went over it very carefully to check) and her DH should have cleaned the snow off his rear windscreen.
she carried on shouting so I walked away. She followed me and said she'd find out where we lived from our )Swiss) numberplate and come and put a stone through our windows.
Was IBU?

YANBU

I'd go to the police, just in case they follow through on their threat.

And see if you can get the CCTV kept.

So the car was reversing into you and you were instinctively defending yourself with th trolley?

They couldn't see because they hadn't cleared their windscreen?

I think you should have called their bluff and insisted they called the police.

Take a photo of their rear windscreen.
Sounds a horrible thing to have had to experience.
I've taught both of my children to hit a suddenly reversing car with the flat of their hand, no damage but a loud thump. Warns the driver more than a yell.
Supermarket car parks are dreadful for that sort of idiocy.

I will give the policeman a ring (yum yum Franky), but not sure that he will be able to do anything. It was an underground car park, but the snow was on everyones car due to the temp down there being -6.

That makes it much worse - surely you get fined for driving with snow on your car?

Shows no regard for pedestrians or other road users.

You should have called the police there and then. What horrid people - would never have happened over here - not Hmm

All Belgium drivers are insane nutters. Fact. I have an abject fear of driving through Belgium and have to swap with DH at the service station just before Antwerp. I keep my eyes closed until Northern France. Well, maybe not literally, but you get the gist. (I live in NL, BTW)

No, yanbu because you acted instinctively

Baroness, they are particularly bonkers. I've driven all over the world (Thailand, Vietnam, Italy, Aus, Turkey etc) and I don't think I've come accross such bad driving.
I think the thing that caused me to not shout back was this was such out the ordinary behaviour. Every other person I've had any dealings wiht in Belgium has been lovely.
