Gary glitter certainly, but technically michael jackson was never proven to be one...

Oh I know what you mean. It's not the same. If only this was true - we could listen to Off The Wall without feeling creepy...

I'm totally with you. GG especially creeps me out completely.

Yes - I know what you mean too. I used to like some of Gary Glitter's music before it came out he was a paedophile. Never played it since.

I don't play Michael Jackson either.

YANBU

IMO, MJ was certainly inappropriate in his behaviour towards children.. at the least. I have my own thoughts on this I posted on other threads, I do not listen to his music, switch off teh radio if he comes on, ditto GG.

However, I imagine if we avoided music by criminals/convicts/ropey people, we'd only be left with Norah Jones and James Blunt Confused

Yanbu. I enjoy a bit of nostalgia so often watch the 80s shows on MTV etc. I always turn off MJ as he creeps me out. Yes he was damaged by his upbringing but he was a bloody weirdo who was not at all appropriate around children.

However I turn James blunt off too but for very different reasons.

Even James Blunt is on shaky ground Lulu - he treated Tara Palmer-Tompkinson abominably, the cad!

I can't not listen to MJ. He was such a huge part of my musical education.

Gary Glitter was shite pre-paedo. And he is a convicted paedo, isn't he? Scumbag.

YABU
I don't listen to music and think 'I can't like this music because the artist is a paedophile'. I don't listen to Michael Jackson, because personally I think his music is shite. But I would listen to Gary Glitter, although I don't condone what he is in anyway.

YABU Michael Jackson was never convicted of anything

If I took pleasure in listening to Gary Glitter's music I would feel like I was betraying the kids he abused.

That's how I feel.

I do find it a bit odd the way GG who was in the charts for much of the time I was into chart music is never played and never talked about in 70s music.
Yes he's a paedo but he served his time, unlike Roman Polanski who evaded justice and whose films are still showed regularly.
It does have a naziish rewriting history element to the way his part in glam rock is never mentioned.
Michael J was never convicted but it's highly unlikely he wasn't a paedo. I think the kids GG went for were older than those MJ liked to sleep with, apparently innocently Hmm

"YABU Michael Jackson was never convicted of anything"

Oh come on. I know there are people who believe the man's a demi-God, but whether because of mental illness or bad intent, he was not the kind of person I'd want around my children.

MJ was a pop genius an did change pop music and dance, so I think his influence can be heard in many acts that are popular today.

You have to work hard not to listen to his music.

yanbu.

Can we add R Kelly to the list - he was convicted wasn't he?

Nancy66 · 27/11/2010 10:19

We know GG is guilty and you'd have to be an idiot to not see that MJ was a paedophile too.

But, i would still listen to their music.
MJ recorded some fantastic songs - i don't feel guilty about enjoying them.

Michael Jackson was very probably, although not according to law, a child fiddler.

The fact is, he's remembered for his music, yes, but also pastic surgery, sheer bizarreness and pedo activty.

Michael Jackson was mentally ill so that's on shaky ground for me. That's not to suggest that his behaviour was at all normal or acceptable, but there was an element of mental illness in everything he did. I do listen to his music, but then I remember him pre-Jordy Chandler so I was indoctrinated before anyone knew he was a bit Hmm.

Gary Glitter is vile and it is proven so, so I do feel uncomfortable hearing any of his stuff. Not that they play it on the radio of course.

And yes, R Kelly, definitely something off about him, that tape and those Aaliyah rumours. But I'm not hugely inclined to listen to him anyway.

NeverEatYellowTaintedSnow · 27/11/2010 10:22

Sorry, MJ wasn't on shaky ground with me because he was mentally ill, just that him being a paedophile (which he undoubtedly was in his actions) is on shaky ground because of his illness. Being raised and abused the way he was, it's hardly surprising there was something a bit off about him as an adult.

I could happily live the rest of my life never having to hear that fucking 'I Believe I Can Fly' song again....

The term 'Child Fiddler' makes me want to vomit.

Report
snugglepops · 27/11/2010 10:36

No I am not sure R Kelly was ever convicted.

He had the song for the world cup.

And I totally agree with Little Yellow Teapot - how sick was that comment.

Too close to the bone is it? Makes me sick to think Michael Jackson go away with paying off these kids that he fiddled with.

Report
LittleYellowTeapot · 27/11/2010 10:43

Please stop Animation.
The word is abused. Not fiddled.

Fiddled makes the abuse sound benign. It's not.
