putting a nice carpet in baby's bedroom

Would it be mad to put a nice wool carpet in a baby's bedroom?

I'm thinking that if we get a nice one it will last well into his childhood. I only have one baby so not sure how mad it would be given the potty training and puking accidents we can look forward to.

What other sorts of messes do small boys make in their rooms?

no i think nice carpet is fine. in fact, i have nice carpet throughout, despite having 3 boys! lol
most wool carpets can be easily cleaned with a bleach solution..

anyway, bedroom... definitely! they only really use their room to sleep in for the first few years. potty training IME tends to mainly happen downstairs cos that's where you spend most of your time.... don't think we;ve ever had a real mess on a bedroom carpet

ds is hardly ever in his room so the carpet in there is still pristine, unlike the one in the front room.

why would you potty train in the bedroom

go for an easy clean carpet rather than wool as im pretty sure wool carpets can't be steam cleaned, shrinkage or something?!

Mine have the same carpet as everywhere else but that is basically "nice" carpet and so far so good. You can get milky pukes in the early days as you burp them after a night feed, depending where you do that. If they have a tummy bug they might puke down your back and have some land on the floor etc! And as older children that could happen too.

Regarding things they play with, if you dont use the room to play in with things like pens, paint and playdough (which comes out of carpet anyway as do most pens and paint, depending!) then you should be fine. My son got some bath crayons on his carpet, that lifted out fine.

Having said all that, and this may identify me in real life because I've told anyone who will listen, but I actually had a bottle of OPI nail polish break on my bedroom carpet - of all colours it had to be Lincoln Park After Dark which is vampy burgundy almost black type colour - and it came out!!! It dried there overnight (drunk, DH wouldn't entertain the idea of me cleaning it up there and then at 2am) and it ALL came up! So nail polish remover does what it says on the tin!

My carpet is amazing though! Its wool blend, apparently, and I think that little bit of nylon makes all the difference so you might consider that.

Having said that, the worst are those sisal and grassy type fibres - very absorbant but hard to get the fluid out again! Hard wearing from a traffic point of view but bad for liquids.

The only thing with wool also is can you Vax it using warm water or would it shrink? I think its nice to have the option to rug doctor or Vax a carpet with kids - if not for stains, then for smells...

When we got DD1 a new carpet (she was older than a baby though) we deliberately thought we'd try not to mind what kind of mess she made on it.

First night it was down, she leaned over her cabin bed thingy (up a ladder) and threw up all over the carpet

We've got carpet in DS1's room & is still in good nick despite various puking, weeing & pooing incidents since he was moved out of his cot aged 2. We're experiencing a new phenomenon with him at the moment though - bogies on the wall - yuck!!

I have a lovely soft cream carpet in ds2's room. It was bliss under the bare feet when trekking in and out during the night!

Plus it has survived sudocrem and bodily fluids really well.

Top tip though - take them to the bathroom before you give them Calpol.

Go for it. We recarpeted DS's room just before he was born and when we moved out recently, it was still pristine. DS is 3 and still hardly plays in his room so it gets very little wear and tear.

We did put down a cheap Ikea rug and that's been washed a fair few times

Our cream carpet in the nursery is ruined with spills, drips, accidents. Sudocrem. Juice. Calpol. Scrubbing the marks might lift the immediate spot but over time the entire carpet doesn't look so great. We are pretty clean and tidy people too but over time each small mark accumulates until the whole thing is shabby looking. Obviously the colour doesn't help, perhaps if it was blue, or green, or more of a digestive biscuit colour than cream it might have lasted longer.

We have rug-doctored once and it came up fab, but apparently carpet cleaning takes off some of the dirt-resistant finish so you end up needing to carpet clean more and more IYSWIM.

I really wouldn't buy an expensive carpet. Buy a hardwearing one in a nice colour because IMO they don't last that long so you might as well enjoy the colour before you throw it out

mine aren't allowed food and drinks in their room.
nappy changes are done downstairs. always give medicines while they are IN bed so it doesn't go on carpet.

that's why my upstairs ones look nice still

Thank god I only bought a cheap rug for my DS's room. It meant that when he was violently sick all over it the other week I could just roll it up and bin it without a twinge of conscience. It was already stained and looked pretty crappy by then anyway. DS is 16months old so it didn't last long.

we live in a rented property and they recarpeted before we moved in. the colour is perfect biscuity with white flecks - in other words the colour of poo and sick!

we are in a flat so they play in their bedroom as well as the lounge but no food in the bedroom(dining table is in the lounge) carpet in lounge is surviving but definiyley more marked than the bedroom . bedroom has been seen sicked on but thats the worst. imagine the carpet wasn't an expensive one though

I'd agree that a cream carpet would perhaps not be the best choice (but you didn't say what colour you were thinking of). Plain carpets always show dirty marks more than patterned/flecked ones. A rug by the changing table and later by the bed means that spills etc can be easily cleaned. A nice new carpet will make getting up in the middle of the night at least feel nicer under foot.

My biggest tip for later on is NEVER allow a felt tip pen to cross the threshold unless it's a crayola super washable!

I was also told that you shouldn't wash a wool carpet because as someone else said wool carpets do have natural oils that help repel the dirt which are removed when washing, but also you will never remove all of the soap suds and the reamining suds do indeed trap more dirt.

Oh yeah, calpol and carpet don't mix. Don't use baby wipes to clean up on your carpet either, mine left a dirty grey stain I can't get out.

Mad. I put an old thick wool rug (that had been dry cleaned first) in DD's room. Wait until they are over the sick years before putting a new or fitted carpet down.

No one warns you about Calpol stains in ante-natal classes, do they? If not for Calpol, we would have a pristine carpet in DS's room - he always waits till he's on the hall carpet nappy free before he wees.

Slightly off-topic - Tatty, if you have any advice for bad red wine splatter on cream carpets, I will adore you for a very long time...
