Brother is 30 so cannot blame youth for this. He is becoming extremely materialistic and is always boating that he earns more than the rest of us.

Now we have always sniggered at him behind his back because he asks my mum how much she is spending on his christmas presents and then presents her a list in which every penny of the budget is spent. He won't let her surprise him. Now we really are an age when he should stop asking what his budget is surely and allow my mum (who earns half of what he does)to cut back a bit.She is very generous anyway so probably wouldn't but it's the expectation of it all that riles me.

My dad (seperated from mum) has obviously decided to cut back in recent years and has taken to giving us 20 quid in a card (fine by me as he isn't a high earner and he is generous with our kids). This year my brother has outright asked him to buy him an item for christmas that costs 80 quid. He has obviously thought long and hard how he can get more out of him after the disappointment of opening his card last year. My mum told me he was laughing about it to her but I don't think it's funny - it's embarrassing.

I was going to get him a game for his playstation and was bargain hunting to get one for around 15 quid. He asked me what i was getting him (obviously so he can download the demo to see if he likes it and check out the price). He has helpfully suggested i get him a game that costs 40 quid. I told him to sod off so he has asked me for a voucher. I told him i don't like buying vouchers and now he has text me asking for a game that costs 25 quid. He knows im not earning at the moment as on mat leave and I actually turned down a meal the other day saying I was low on funds and was saving for the kids presents. Is this normal for someone of his age? Is he being savvy or just a greedy, cheeky shit?

IMO he's being a greedy, cheeky shit - sorry to say. He's not a child anymore and if he earns more than everyone else in his immediate family he should count himself lucky he gets anything at all!

I'd be included to tell him that you're not doing Christmas presents at all this year .... but then I'm mean like that :o

Greedy, cheeky shit!

I would be SORELY tempted to spend the money on one of those Oxfam 'adopt a goat' or 'I have planted a tree' for you gifts. Blow your budget and spent £40 on doing it. And then if he moans about his gift, you can say "How rude, I spent £40 on that!" but at least he won't get anything from you himself!!

Or something from the pound shop.

another vote for cheeky, greedy shit!

ffs he is 30, not a child, maybe it is time the family stopped indulging his nonsense.

Shock he is a greedy, cheeky shit. Give him a well in Namibia or something. something that would benefit other people. Cheeky sod.

greedy and grabbing

give your dad the money you would have spent to put towards something he asked for, get your mum to make up the rest Wink

He's being a cheeky shit. Point out to him how unfair it is of him to ask for expensive items from people who earn a fraction of what he does, and tell him to be a tiny bit more thoughtful of others. Frankly, embarass him as much as needed to get through his self-centred skull that it is really not acceptable to behave that way.

Glad it's not just me that thinks this. It's annoying as i'm quite good at bargain hunting but he is insisting on me telling him what I buy so he checks it all out first.

He's been a cheeky fecker and should be grateful to get anything at all, bearing in mind your current financial situation. Tell him if he wants a game that's £25 he can get it himself, then spend what you can afford.

I'd be really interested to hear what he buys for people.

sponsor an african child for him... might give him food for thought... alternatively, 'buy' him a wonderful experience volunteering for an afternoon at a homeless shelter!

he is soo rude!! presents are supposed to be what someone chose for you, you dont demand it and try to bargain with people to get an extra few pounds worth, he sounds well tight and grabbing - i would tell him to piss off and have nothing if he is like that, or the goat thing

Greedy, cheeky shit. If someone told me how much to spend on them that would make me want to go and find a cheap novelty for about 50p.

He sounds awful!

But then I had it instilled in me from a very early age that we don't talk about money.

Don't get him anything. Seriously, I don't have siblings but my DH is one of 6 and they don't buy each other anything. Or tell him to fuck off and grow up. Does he have a partner? If so, do they indulge him?

I vote for greedy shit as well and would suggest you club together with your family to buy him a latrine for Oxfam or other charity!

Selfish and grasping. Go to Oxfam Unwrapped and buy a gift card for some chickens for an African village, or a water treatment kit or something. Might remind him that some people in the world would kill to be in a position where Christmas would be 'ruined' because they didn't get the right computer game.

I would say a selfish, grasping git.

Stick to your guns and don't be bullied into over spending..

What on earth is a 345 yo doing with a playstation - has he ever had to grow up or is he always indulged???

WOW. Have you told him how ridiculous it is for a 30yo with a good job to be basically writing to Father Christmas?
