to believe that most people who regularly use the Talk section of Mumsnet know, or have met, at least some of the others in RL

I don't know anyone on MN in RL.

I get the impression that many people who regularly post in talk either know one or two (sometimes many more) posters in RL, or have at least met them at MN events/get-togethers.

I think it's lovely but for some stupid reason it makes me feel a bit envy. This is utterly ridiculous as I have lovely friends in RL.

Am I right though? I'm curious - do most people 'know' other MNers?

I don't.

I have never met a single mums netter in rl although I am a reasonably recognizable name on talk I think. So you are being completely unreasonable.
You are imagining a connection or cliquishness that does not exist.

Some are friend anyway & must just recommend Mn to each other. I've met a few mnetters but not regularly.

I must admit I often feel that my comments are ignored, and the regulars are having seperate conversations, and know all the in jokes.
Like being on the outskirts at a party.

I don't know any MNs in RL. Don't wish to as I want to use it as an online forum not a get together. It does irk me when someone pops up in a thread and says <waves at whatsername>. PM them if you want to wave at them!

AttillaTheHan Sat 20-Nov-10 20:04:05

I don't
and I'm quite happy with that as mn meets my virtual needs without me needing to have friends here.

I have met a few MN'ers in the past but other than that I don't meet up with MN'ers - except my friend who knows my name and I haven't got a clue what her posting name is!

There are a few on my FB (mostly from the post-natal thread) so I have a rough idea who's who.

AFAIK I don't know any mnetters in RL.

bellavita Sat 20-Nov-10 20:07:38

I have made some lovely friends on here. One regular mner lives quite near me and we have met for coffees (this was after we discovered we lived nearish each other).

I am on a "regular" thread and have met the girls on there last June, in fact I am meeting up with some of them next Saturday too, we are going to the mn xmas do. Why don't you come?

SlightlyJaded Sat 20-Nov-10 20:07:44

Oh dear, I think I have mis-represented myself. I am very happy to remain annonymous. I have lots of good friends in RL, it's more the fact on quite a few posts lately, I've noticed that people seem to know things about each other that are defo RL related. And the touch of envy came from a mild feeling of being on the outskirts. Silly really.

sharbie Sat 20-Nov-10 20:08:02

nor me

Ragwort Sat 20-Nov-10 20:10:03

I've been posting (on and off) for ten years - never met anyone in RL who is on MN (to my knowledge) - don't have any 'buddies' on here - I don't do the 'waving' bit grin.

southeastastra Sat 20-Nov-10 20:11:40

i went to a meet up in 2007 but most of those vamoosed

met lovely rhubarb and custard who were very welcoming

was in awe at how glam most mnetters are tbh!

ethelina Sat 20-Nov-10 20:12:40

I don't know anyone in RL from here. I'll happily talk to anyone but if my posts are ignored I just shrug my shoulders and carry on regardless. Sometimes it's nicer and easier to chat for a few minutes on a short thread than wade through on the big ones so I tend to ignore them after the first 100 posts unless it's deeply interesting.

bellavita Sat 20-Nov-10 20:12:58

SJ, I see you are from London - how about you come to the xmas do next Sat? Then you will get to know people and perhaps then on threads you will not feel left out?

tryingtobemarypoppins2 Sat 20-Nov-10 20:13:05

I once posted to have a moan about my mum......she posted back blushblush It wasn't good shock

jamaisjedors Sat 20-Nov-10 20:13:14

nope

SlightlyJaded Sat 20-Nov-10 20:14:07

Bella that's really sweet of you. Thank you blush. I didn't even know there was a MN Xmas do. Next Saturday is Done of my DC's Christmas Fair and I will be in Tombola purgatory and tinsel-clean-up-hell. But really, thank you

lollipopshoes Sat 20-Nov-10 20:14:08

I have met some MNers in RL but I rarely (if ever) talk to them on chat.

I think perhaps what you're noticing is either the fact that some people have been here for years (and it wasn't always the massive site it is today - a few years ago there weren't that many posting so you remembered them from one thread to the next - and from then on)

or... you've come a bit of a cropper of the "I have a spreadsheet and I know everything about you brigade.

There are, of course, some MNers that I see on here and "recognise" but plenty more who I haven't a clue about, but they know me - maybe they've namechanged, or maybe I just didn't notice their posts so much in the past.

I think there are some MNers who are friends in RL, but they are very few and far between.

Rockbird Sat 20-Nov-10 20:14:59

I went to the Christmas meet up in 2008 but most of those seem to have moved on now. But those I did meet wouldn't recognise me in a line up so it's as if I haven't met any of them IYSWIM
